GAME NOTES: Oregon State will travel to the Bay Area this weekend for a Pac-12 clash with the California Golden Bears, who looked dominant in their win over Washington State last weekend.

Oregon State had no answer for Andrew Luck and the Stanford Cardinal last weekend in Corvallis, as Luck won for the first time in the state of Oregon and dampened any hope for the Beavers to make a late season push into bowl eligibility. The rushing attack continues to be absent for the Oregon State offense, which is still maturing under a freshman quarterback. The Beavers hope to close the season strong starting this weekend in San Francisco against Cal, followed by a home contest with Washington and a road trip to Eugene for the Civil War against Oregon.

In beating Washington State 30-7 last weekend, the Golden Bears need just one win to become bowl eligible, and have a good opportunity to do it this weekend against the struggling Beavers. California established the run last weekend against Washington State, and played physical defense and contained the Cougar's aerial attack, considered to among the bets in the Pac-12 this season. Cal closes the season with road trips at Stanford and Arizona State.

California leads the all-time series with Oregon State, 33-30.

Oregon State met one of the best defenses in the country last weekend in Stanford, which held the Beavers to 285 total yards - including just 33 yards rushing. Oregon State had problems sustaining drives, picking up just 13 first downs and going 2-of-9 on third down. Sean Mannion completed 18-of-30 passes for 252 yards and one touchdown, and James Rodgers caught six passes for 77 yards and one touchdown.

Mannion has been up and down during his freshman season, leading an offense that produces 379.3 yards and 21.8 points per game. Mannion is ninth in the Pac-12 in passing efficiency (125.4), and has thrown for 2,447 yards and 11 touchdowns against 13 interceptions this season. Oregon State averages 284.8 yards per game through the air, a comforting statistic considering the beavers are currently 113th in the country in rushing. Markus Wheaton is third in the Pac-12 in receptions (6.6) and fourth in receiving yards per game (85.7), while Rodgers registers five catches for 56.2 yards per game.

Oregon State's defense surrendered 507 yards of total offense last weekend against the Cardinal, who racked up 31 first downs and were a perfect five-of- five in the red zone. Anthony Watkins led the Beavers in tackles with 12, and Lance Mitchell added 10 in the loss. Oregon State has the seventh rated defense in the Pac-12, allowing 391.7 yards per game, with 171.2 yards rushing and 220.5 yards passing. Oregon State has also struggled to play in the opponents backfield up front, ranking 116th in the country in tackles for loss. Michael Doctor leads the team in tackles with 6.5 per game, while Watkins averages 6.3 stops per contest.

Quarterback Zach Maynard exited the game in the third quarter against Washington State due to injury last weekend, but Cal's offense didn't skip a beat. That was primarily due tot he fact that the running game was in rhythm, led by Isi Sofele, who ran for 138 yards and a touchdown. Maynard finished with 118 yards and a touchdown through the air, and will be back in the lineup this weekend against Oregon State. Sofele is the centerpiece of the offense, which averages 416.3 yards per game. Over 150 of those yards come on the ground, and Sofele ranks fifth in the Pac-12 with 93.2 yards per game. Sofele has carried the ball at least 23 times in two of the last three games, and has scored seven touchdowns this season.

Maynard is rated 10th in the Pac-12 in passing efficiency, and has thrown for 2,157 yards with 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions this season. Cal averages 263.6 yards passing per game, and features one of the best receivers in the country in Keenan Allen, who had eight catches for 85 yards last weekend against the Cougars. Allen is tied for seventh in the country in receptions (8.3), and posts 119.3 yards per game, which is good for sixth in the nation.

Cal put forth one of its best defensive performances of the season against Washington State, holding the Cougars to just 224 yards of total offense, including 69 yards on the ground. Washington State finished four-of-16 on third down, and was 0-for-4 on fourth down. Five different players had six or more tackles for Cal, who had four sacks and were paced by an eight tackle game from D.J. Campbell. Overall, the Golden Bears are one of the most productive units in the Pac-12. Cal is second in the league in total defense (324.5) and fifth in scoring defense (24.). The Golden Bears lead the Pac-12 in pass defense (194.3) and tackles for loss (7.7), and are third in sacks (2.7 per game). Mychal Kendricks leads the team in both tackles (7.3) and tackles for loss (.8) per game.

Mannion continues to endure growing pains for Oregon State, which is limping toward the finish line. The Beavers haven't played particularly well on the road this season, and face one of the best defenses in the Pac-12 this weekend. Sofele should be able to play smash mouth football against the Oregon State front much like last weekend against Washington State. California should pull this one out on Senior Day.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: California 31, Oregon State 21.
