GAME NOTES: Two of the worst teams in Conference USA will collide this Saturday afternoon, as the Memphis Tigers host the UAB Blazers.

It has been a miserable season for the Blazers, who have won just once in nine games. That victory came against UCF, 26-24, but since then the team has dropped back-to-back matchups, falling to Marshall and Houston.

The Tigers have not been much better because the team has won just twice on the season. The most recent victory for Memphis was a 33-17 decision over Tulane, but that was followed by a 41-0 loss to UCF, dropping the team to just 1-4 in league action.

The Blazers have won the last two matchups against Memphis and now own a 9-4 edge over the Tigers in the all-time series.

The miserable year can be attributed to UAB's poor play offensively, as the team is averaging just 14.7 ppg. The ground game has been virtually non- existent, as the team comes into this matchup averaging only 109.0 ypg on a mere 3.5 yards per attempt.

The passing attack has not been much better, as Jonathan Perry and Bryan Ellis have both struggled running the show. Perry has thrown for 1,206 yards, but has only three touchdowns against seven interceptions. As for Ellis, he only has two touchdowns, and has tossed five interceptions.

UAB's inability to produce offensively continued in its loss to Houston, as the Tigers finished with just 115 rushing yards, and had another tough time through the air. Perry threw a touchdown in the contest, but he finished with just 149 yards and was intercepted once.

The blame cannot be placed solely on the offense, because the defense has been just as bad, if not worse. UAB has been unable to stop any opponent, and it shows in the 37.4 ppg this unit is allowing.

Teams have been able to pick the Blazers apart through the air, averaging over 300.0 ypg, while also collecting 21 passing TDs. On the ground the defense has been just as bad, surrendering 193.0 ypg and another 18 touchdowns.

Just like every other team in the conference, the Blazers were picked apart by Case Keenum and Houston's passing attack, as the quarterback for the Cougars dismantled UAB for 407 yards and two scores.

Just like the Blazers, the Tigers have not had much bite offensively and come into this contest averaging a mere 14.6 ppg. On the ground the Tigers have done very little, rushing for just 82.8 ypg on a mere 2.5 yards pr attempt.

Memphis has not done any better with the pass, as Taylor Reed has been nothing more than mediocre on the season and even that is a stretch. Reed has thrown eight touchdowns, but has tossed just four interceptions.

Nothing went right for the Tigers in the loss to UCF, as the offense totaled just 134 yards. The Tigers finished with just 33 rushing yards, while Reed completed just 9-of-20 passes for only 97 yards.

Compounding the problem for Memphis this year has been the poor play defensively, as the Tigers are surrendering 34.8 ppg. Opponents are churning out 190 yards on the ground and have scored 21 rushing touchdowns against Memphis and that is only half of the story, because the secondary is being torched for over 300 yards per matchup, and has surrendered 20 touchdowns.

In the loss to UCF, the Tigers were overpowered by the Knights on the ground, as they pulverized Memphis for 261 yards and four touchdowns. Kenyata Johnson and Johnnie Farms led the Tigers in the loss with nine tackles apiece.

Clearly UAB and Memphis are two struggling programs this season. Give a slight edge to Memphis simply for homefield advantage.
