GAME NOTES: Toledo will try to stay in the race for the Mid-American Conference Championship as it travels to Mount Pleasant to take on Central Michigan in a Friday night matchup.
Toledo is tied for the lead with Northern Illinois in the West Division of the MAC with a 5-1 conference record after topping Western Michigan 66-63 in the highest scoring game in the history of the league. Northern Illinois holds the tie-breaker with the Rockets, after Toledo fell to the Huskies 63-60 the week before the shootout with the Broncos.
Central Michigan enters its final game of the year with a disappointing 3-8 record. The Chippewas have a chance to improve from last year's 3-9 finish with a win over the Rockets.
The all-time series between the MAC rivals is tied at 18-18-3. Toledo won last year's contest 42-31 to snap a five game losing streak against the Chippewas. Toledo has done very well in conference play in recent history as it has won 12 of its last 14 MAC games dating back to last season.
Toledo's offense has been unbelievable lately as it has posted back-to-back games with 60 points or more. The Rockets lead the conference in total offense with 490 yards per game and points with 41.8 per game, which is the eighth best in the country.
Toledo put up 589 yards of total offense in its 63-60 loss to Northern Illinois before torching Western Michigan's defense for 804 total yards. The Rockets were effective through the air and on the ground in victory as they rushed for 419 yards and threw for 385. Quarterbacks Austin Dantin and Terrance Owens have split time for the Rockets this season. Owens threw for a career high 318 yards and three touchdowns as he completed 22-of-27 passes against the Broncos. The week before against the Huskies Dantin completed 20- of-33 attempts for 321 yards and five touchdowns. With either quarterback behind center, Toledo has been effective as of late.
Adonis Thomas was unstoppable against Western Michigan as he rushed for a career-high 216 yards and added 77 receiving yards while scoring three total touchdowns. The performance came after a 160 rushing yard outing against Northern Illinois. Morgan Williams was also a big factor last week as he carried the ball 10 times for 76 yards and two touchdowns.
Receiver Eric Page has stood out this year as he has won the MAC Offensive Player of the Week award four times already. Page caught nine passes against Northern Illinois for 149 yards and a school-record five touchdowns. The wideout has 882 yards for the year.
Head Coach Tim Beckman cannot be pleased with his defensive unit now that it has given up 63 points in back-to-back games. Before the pair of shootouts, Toledo only allowed two opponents to score more than 30 points in a game. The Rockets' defense hopes to get back on track against Central Michigan.
Central Michigan is no pushover as it owns the third best passing offense in the MAC. The Chippewas proved they can put points on the board earlier in the year when they handed Northern Illinois its only loss in a 48-41 affair. Central Michigan is not as bad as its record indicates as three of its losses have been by a touchdown or less.
The Chippewas air-it-out attack is led by Ryan Radcliff, who surpassed the 3000 yard mark for the year during last week's loss to Ohio. In the struggle against the Bobcats, Radcliff completed 26-of-52 attempts for 362 yards and three touchdowns.
Freshman Titus David has been lighting up lately with back-to-back 100 yard games. The rookie wide out caught ten passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns against Kent State before reeling in six balls for 110 yards and two more touchdowns against the Bobcats.
Central Michigan's defense has struggled all season as each of its opponents since its week two loss to Syracuse have gained over 400 yards of total offense. The Chippewas hardly ever pressure opposing quarterbacks as they are ranked 110th in the nation in sacks per game. Jahleel Addae leads the team and ranks fifth in the conference with 96 total tackles.
Central Michigan could end Toledo's conference championship dreams if they can take care of the football and make some big plays. However, Toledo's offense is firing on all cylinders right now and has extra motivation to continue its success.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Toledo 42, Central Michigan 31
