GAME NOTES: Akron will travel to the Empire State to take on Buffalo in Mid- American Conference action this weekend.
Akron is still winless in league play after losing to the Golden Flashes of Kent State last time out. The Zips are the only team in the conference without a win, as they head into their final two games. The loss to Kent State was the sixth straight for the Zips, who have lost every game except their September 24th bout with VMI. Akron has a very young roster as it has called upon the services of 13 true freshman over the season.
Buffalo is also in the cellar of the MAC as it has just one win in the conference this year. The Bulls have lost four straight after falling to Eastern Michigan 30-17 in their last outing. The game against Akron will be the first home game for Buffalo in nearly a month as it hopes the friendly confines will bring it out of its slump.
Akron holds a 9-3 advantage in the all-time series between these programs as they play for the 13th consecutive season. Buffalo is 5-2 at home in the series and 2-2 at home this season. Akron has not won on the road since October 18th, 2008. The Zips' most recent road loss at Miami Ohio was their 18th straight. The Zips posted a 22-14 win over the Bulls in the final game of 2010 at Akrons InfoCision Stadium Summa Field.
The Zips' have had disappointing performances offensively in recent weeks. Akron has not scored a touchdown in its last two games as it was held to just three points in each outing. The Zips are averaging 212 yards per contest in their last two games. Clayton Moore has been the leader of the Zips this season with 1652 passing yards, but has struggled as he has nine touchdowns and eight interceptions while completing just 48.8 percent of his attempts.
Freshman tailback Jawon Chisholm had 845 rushing yards this season, but was held to just 26 yards on nine carries in his last outing.
Sophomore wideout Keith Sconiers had two great performances earlier in the season as he had 137 yards and a touchdown against Cincinnati and 154 yards and two touchdowns against VMI. Marquelo Suel is second on the team in receiving despite missing three games due to injury. Suel showed his abilities against Central Michigan as he had 112 yards and two touchdowns on a career- high 11 receptions.
Brian Wagner leads the Zips defense and ranks second in the nation with 138 tackles. Akron's opponents are averaging over 400 yards of total offense and 34.3 points per game against the Zips. Recently Akron has given up 383 yards of total offense to both Central Michigan and Miami Ohio and 380 yards of total offense to Kent State.
Buffalo's offense revolves around its star running back Branden Oliver. The sophomore tailback surpassed the 1000-yard mark for the first time in his career last week against Eastern Michigan as he ran for 133 yards to give him a total of 1033 for the season.
The Bulls' offense is managed by Chazz Anderson. The senior quarterback has thrown for 2,142 yards this season while completing 57 percent of his passes. His best performance came against Northern Illinois when he completed 35-of-53 passes for 404 yards and three touchdowns. Anderson will be without his favorite target Alex Neutz, who will miss the remainder of the season with an injured wrist. Marcus Rivers should see more targets with Neutz out as he is second on the team in receiving with 570 yards.
The Bulls are only scoring 18.7 points per game, a number that has hurt them as the defense is allowing opponents to score an average of 30.1 points per game.
Buffalo's defense has allowed its opponents to score 30 or more points in its last six games. Over that span those opponents have averaged 437.2 yards of total offense per game. Opposing running backs love playing against the Bulls as Buffalo has held its opponent under 100 yards rushing just once all year. Temple rushed for 400 yards against Buffalo. Khalil Mach is a bright spot on the defense as he is first in the conference in tackles for loss with 15 which is tied for 11th best in the nation.
Buffalo has the homefield advantage and a star to rely on in Oliver, while Akron has a lot to figure out as it nears the off-season. Buffalo has been much more competitive this year as a few of its losses to respectable opponents have been very close games. A return to New York should boost the Bulls to their second conference win of the year.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Buffalo 24, Akron 13
