GAME NOTES: Army will square off with Temple for the fifth straight season when the Black Knights travel to Philadelphia to take on the Owls at Lincoln Financial Field in non-conference action.
Army has struggled this season after a 7-6 campaign in 2010 as it is 3-7 this season. The Black Knights have lost two straight and four of their last five. Army lost to Rutgers in its final home game of the season last week as the Scarlet Knights left West Point with a 27-12 victory. A win at Temple would give Army its first win away from home in 2011.
Temple ended a two-game losing skid last week with a 24-21 win over Miami- Ohio. The Owls are currently in second place in the Mid American Conference's East Division and will close out conference play next week as they host Kent State.
The rivalry between these programs continues as they meet for the ninth time. A series that dates back to 1943 is tied 4-4, but the Owls have dominated in recent history winning three straight and four of the last five over the Black Knights. Temple escaped the 2010 meeting with a 42-35 victory over Army at Michie Stadium.
Army's option offense has the top rushing attack in the nation with 352 yards per game and the worst passing attack in the nation with just 50 yards per contest. Army was without its top two rushers, Raymond Maples and Trent Steelman, in its loss to Rutgers. Maples is expected to return to face the Owls, while Steelman's return is questionable.
Maples is the Black Knights' top rusher with 891 yards and four touchdowns on 121 carries. The sophomore running back missed the game against Rutgers due to a head injury he sustained in practice, but is expected to return this week to face the Owls.
Steelman has missed the last three games with a sprained left ankle. The junior quarterback was responsible for 923 yards of offense and 13 touchdowns in seven games before going down with an injury against Vanderbilt.
If Steelman is out, freshman Angelo Santiago will be under center for the Black Knights. The rookie quarterback had 149 yards of total offense in his first career start against the Scarlet Knights last week. Santiago is not the only newcomer to see action for Army this year. The Black Knights have utilized 19 true freshman in action this year, the most from any team in the nation.
Army's defense has done a good job this season against opposing quarterbacks this season as it has the 17th best pass defense in the nation. The Black Knights are allowing 27.0 points per game. The rushing defense will be tested by Temple's strong backfield this week.
The Owls were without their star running back Bernard Pierce last week against the Redhawks, but still managed to win the contest 24-21. Pierce's return against the Black Knights is questionable as a leg injury that kept him out last week might not be completely healed. If Pierce does play, he has the ability to completely change games. The junior tailback has 1,035 yards and 19 touchdowns this season.
If Pierce is out again, Matt Brown will pick up the slack. Brown carried the ball 24 times for 123 yards and a touchdown last week as he eclipsed the 100- yard mark for the fourth time this year.
Chris Coyer made his first-career start at quarterback for Temple against the Redhawks. Coyer is the third Owls' quarterback to see action this season. The sophomore quarterback gives Temple another rushing option as he has hurt opposing defenses by rushing for 450 yards this season including a 184-yard performance against Ohio, a game in which he also threw for 123 yards and three touchdowns.
Temple has the best defense in the MAC and one of the best in the nation. The Owls are allowing just 13.6 points per game which is the fourth lowest in the nation. Temple's 14th-ranked rush defense, that allows an average of 102.8 yards per game, is going to be challenged by Army's ferocious running game.
Even with Pierce listed as questionable, Temple should be able to extend its winning streak against Army to four games. The Black Knights' injury woes and lack of experience have been detrimental to their success so far and the strong Temple rush defense might be the best Army has faced all season. A Steelman return could alter the complexion of the bout as the junior quarterback has led Army to upsets in the past.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Temple 27, Army 17
