GAME NOTES: Coming off their first win in nearly two months, the Colorado Buffaloes will try to make it two in a row this Saturday night when they visit Rose Bowl Stadium for a Pac-12 Conference clash with the UCLA Bruins.
The Buffaloes topped Arizona 48-29 last weekend to snap a seven-game skid and notch their first victory since September 17. It has been a long and tumultuous season for the Buffs, although a strong finish would give them some optimism heading into the off-season. Following this tilt, CU travels to Utah to wrap up its season next Friday night.
Meanwhile, UCLA lost on the road to those same Utes last weekend, 31-6. Prior to that setback, the Bruins had won three of their previous four games and were gunning for the Pac-12 South Division title. While they are still mathematically in the hunt, they now must win at home against Colorado or at USC next week just to qualify for a bowl for the 10th time in the last 12 seasons.
Colorado owns a 4-2 advantage over UCLA in the head-to-head series, which dates back to 1980.
Colorado ranks toward the bottom of the barrel nationally in most offensive categories, but last week the Buffs scored a season-best 48 points against Arizona to claim their first conference victory of the year. Since Folsom Field opened in 1924, no CU team has gone winless at home. The 2011 Buffaloes would not be that first team, as they imposed their will with four separate 80-yard scoring drives en route to 500 total yards on the day. Tailback Rodney Stewart led the charge with 181 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries, and he also threw a touchdown. Senior wideout Toney Clemons hauled in five passes for 115 yards and a TD, giving him 18 catches for 324 yards and three scores over the last three games. They did all that despite wind gusts that got up to 70 mph in the second half. The key was getting off to a good start, as their confidence was no doubt boosted by a season-best 20 first-half points.
In their previous five games leading up to the Arizona game, the Buffs had been outscored 235-64. Considering Wildcat quarterback Nick Foles entered the game as the Pac-12's leader in passing yards and total offense, it wasn't exactly a rosy outlook for the Colorado defense. Despite the wind, Foles threw for 352 yards and only one touchdown on 35-of-53 passing. The Buffs picked him off three times and registered a pair of sacks. They came up with some big plays to stop drives, as Arizona converted only 5-of-14 third downs and 1-of-3 fourth downs. Senior defensive back Travis Sandersfeld led the CU stand with a game-high 11 tackles (10 solo) and an interception. Of his 11 tackles, three came behind the line of scrimmage, including one sack. For Colorado to come away with a win on the road this weekend, the defense will likely need to generate a turnover or two. On the season, CU has come up with only seven interceptions and four fumble recoveries.
UCLA is scoring just 23.3 points per game on the year, which ranks 10th in the conference and 89th out of 120 Football Bowl Subdivision teams. Last week, the Bruins put forth a particularly inept effort at Utah as they were kept out of the end zone and finished with only six points. Kevin Prince had a tough day under center, completing 12-of-24 passes for 146 yards with two interceptions and three sacks. The Bruins won the total yardage battle, 295-291, but they converted only 4-of-15 third downs for the game and had to settle for field goals on their only two trips to the red zone. With Prince struggling to find a rhythm in the passing game, opposing defenses have crept an extra defender in the box and challenged Prince to beat them with his arm. So far, that has not happened. Since taking over for injured starter Richard Brehaut in early- October, Prince has completed only 53.8 percent of his passes with four touchdowns and six interceptions.
While UCLA's offense has been largely inconsistent throughout the year, the defense is not without its own struggles, particularly against the run where opponents are churning out 190 rushing yards per tilt. Overall, UCLA ranks 87th nationally in total defense (414.2 ypg) and 92nd in points allowed (31.4 ppg). Last week, the Utes heeded the scouting report and all but abandoned the passing game, as quarterback Jon Hays attempted only 13 passes on the day and finished with just 67 passing yards. Instead, Utah bludgeoned the Bruins with 224 rushing yards (5.5 ypc), as John White accounted for 167 of those yards with a pair of TDs on 33 carries. Utah scored on all three of its red-zone opportunities, including two touchdowns. Glenn Love paced the Bruins defense with a game-high 11 tackles, followed by Sean Westgate with 10. However, the defense failed to generate any turnovers.
This game holds more meaning for UCLA, although Colorado comes in hoping to build on its best performance of the year and finish strong. That said, the Buffs may be hard-pressed to repeat last week's performance playing at UCLA's home stadium.
