GAME NOTES: Eastern Michigan travels to Ohio to take on the Kent State Golden Flashes as both teams look to remain in the thick of things in their respective divisions in a Mid-American Conference showdown.
Eastern Michigan is in third place in the MAC's West Division after beating Buffalo 30-17 at home last week. The Eagles are on a hot streak as they have won three of their last four with the only loss coming in a hard-fought 33-31 contest against Ball State. Eastern Michigan has to be pleased with the turnaround this season as their six wins thus far triple the amount it won a year ago.
Kent State is 3-3 in league play which puts them in a third-place tie with Miami Ohio in the MAC's East Division, although the Redhawks hold the tie- breaker after defeating the Golden Flashes earlier in the year. Kent State has won three straight after losing six of its first seven to start the season.
Kent State leads the all-time series over Eastern Michigan as it has won 15 of the previous 28 match-ups dating back to 1973. The Golden Flashes were victorious in the most recent meeting as they bested the Eagles 28-6 on October 17th, 2009.
Eastern Michigan's run-based offense has the nation's 14th best ground attack with 2,293 total rushing yards. Duel-threat Alex Gillett leads the team in both passing and rushing as he has accumulated 1,927 yards of total offense. Javonti Greene and Dominique White are very effective out of the backfield for the Eagles. Greene is second on the team in rushing with 618 yards while White is third with 579 yards. The running backs have five touchdowns a piece. Gillett, Greene, and White are ranked 10th, 11th, and 12th in the conference in rushing yards per game respectively.
Gillett has been more effective through the air in recent games. Against Buffalo he threw for a career-high 234 yards and four touchdowns as he completed 10-of-15 passes. If Gillett can continue to keep opponents honest with the pass, it will create even more opportunities for the strong rushing attack.
Eastern Michigan has the fifth-best defense in the conference as it allows an average of 361.2 yards of total offense per game. The Eagles' defensive unit had its best performance in conference play against Buffalo as it held the Bulls to just 252 total yards of total offense. Eastern Michigan held Western Michigan's high-scoring attack to just 10 points two weeks prior. Its rushing defense that is allowing 137.7 yards will be tested this week by Kent State's ground attack that has been impressive in recent weeks.
Kent State's offense is ranked 119th in the nation, but has shown great improvement during its winning streak. The Golden Flashes' three best offensive performances have come during the streak as they are averaging 373.7 yards of total offense per game after averaging just 180.6 in their first seven games.
Trayion Durham rushed for over 100 yards for the first time in his young career last week against Akron as he took 24 carries for 107 yards and two touchdowns. The freshman tailback has improved his total of rushing yards in each of his last six games.
Spencer Keith has been flawless during the winning streak. After throwing just three touchdowns and eight interceptions in the first seven games of the year, Keith has completed 44-of-65 passes for 575 yards with six touchdowns and zero interceptions. The turnaround has rejuvenated the entire Kent State team.
Kent State's defense is ranked second-best in the conference as it allows 332.1 yards of total offense per game. The Golden Flashes' defense completely shut down Akron last week as the Zips were held to just a field goal and 223 yards of total offense. Luke Batton is the leader of the defense with 85 tackles. Defensive lineman Roosevelt Nix has been a problem for opposing blockers, as his 13 tackles for loss is third-best in the conference.
Kent State's late-season turnaround has given the Golden Flashes a lot of confidence heading into this one. Eastern Michigan will be the best team Kent State has faced in weeks as every team the Golden Flashes have faced during their winning streak have a losing record in the MAC. If Keith continues to move Kent State's offense without any turnovers, the home team will be in great shape. However, Gillett has gained some momentum of his own in recent weeks that will create an exciting battle.
