GAME NOTES: The Miami Hurricanes will travel to Tampa to take on in-state rival South Florida in non-conference action at Raymond James Stadium.
The Hurricanes have lost two of their last three to fall to 5-5. Miami will become bowl eligible with a victory against the Bulls. The game will be the second in a row against an in-state rival for Miami, as it lost to Florida State 23-19 last week.
South Florida snapped a four-game losing streak last week with a decisive 37-17 win over Syracuse. The win over the Orange was the first Big East win of the season for the Bulls, who are now tied with Syracuse for last place in the league. The losing skid came after a 4-0 start to the season.
The matchup between these in-state rivals will be the fourth meeting in the all-time series as Miami has won two of three so far. The Hurricanes beat the Bulls 23-20 in a game that took an overtime period to decide a winner.
Miami's offense is powered by star running back Lamar Miller. The sophomore's current total of 1,108 yards is the fifth-best in school history for a single season and he now trails Clinton Portis's 2001 total of 1,200 yards by 92. Miller began the year with five consecutive games of 100 yards rushing or more, but only has eclipsed the 100-yard mark once since the streak ended against North Carolina.
Mike James has been a big-time weapon inside the red zone as of late. The junior running back has scored two touchdowns in the Hurricanes' last two outings. His eight total touchdowns on the season is third-best on the team.
Jacory Harris has been great in his senior campaign as the Hurricanes' quarterback as he has the ninth best passing efficiency in the country. Harris has minimized his mistakes this season as he has only thrown five interceptions after entering the season with 39 for his career.
Tommy Streeter has been Harris's favorite target this year as he has 734 yards and eight touchdowns. Streeter broke out for 176 yards and two touchdowns on seven receptions in the Hurricanes' loss to Virginia.
Miami's defense limited Florida State to 259 yards of total offense in last week's loss. The Hurricanes are holding opponents to 21.4 points per game and has only allowed 30 or more points twice this season. Sean Spence is the leader of the defense with 89 tackles which is the third most in the ACC. Spence leads the conference in tackles for loss with 16.
The Hurricanes have been aggressive defensively as they have recorded 21 sacks. Marcus Robinson leads the team with five solo sacks.
South Florida owns one of the most dynamic offenses in the country as it is ranked 17th nationally in total offense with 469.2 yards per game and 25th nationally in rushing with 203.8 yards on the ground per game. B.J. Daniels has had a productive season so far as he is ranked second in the Big East in total offense with 315.3 yards per game. Daniels has completed 60.4 percent of his passes while throwing for 2281 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Starling Griffin has been the main benefactor of Daniels's precision as he is averaging 70.4 yards while being targeted five times per game.
The Bulls have three of the Big East's top-10 rushers in Darrell Scott, Daniels, and Demetris Murray. Scott is ranked fifth in the conference with 611 yards, Daniels is sixth with 557 yards, and Murray is ninth in the Big East with 432. The trio has a combined 17 rushing touchdowns.
Miller will have a tough task racking up yards for the Hurricanes as he faces the fierce rush stoppers of South Florida. The Bulls are owners of the 17th best rush defense in the nation as they are allowing 108 yards per game. South Florida has help opponents to 22.4 points per game. Linebacker DeDe Lattimore leads his team in both tackles and sacks taking down 66 opponents and reaching the quarterback 5.5 times this season. He has also added 10 tackles for loss, two forced fumbled and an interception.
The Bulls are ranked third in the nation with 31 sacks and second in the country with 77 tackles for loss.
These two programs have had very similar seasons so far. The defense of South Florida is going to give Miller and Harris problems. Harris is going to see a lot of pressure while Miller will see green jerseys every way he looks. South Florida will be able to take advantage of its array of weapons to win the in- state battle.
