GAME NOTES: Losers of all five of their road games this season, the UNLV Rebels try to find an answer to their problems this weekend as they clash with the Air Force Falcons in Mountain West Conference action.
Not only are the Rebels winless outside of Las Vegas this year, the team has one of the longest road losing streaks in the nation overall entering play this week, having dropped 14 in a row. The team has won a total of two games (Hawaii and Colorado State), but last weekend they let New Mexico off the hook in a 21-14 final in Albuquerque. Not only was it another road setback for UNLV, the Rebels became the first team to be beaten by New Mexico in a year.
As for the Falcons, the team needs wins in its first two games of the season in order to become bowl eligible according to league notes. Last weekend the academy saw a two-game win streak draw to a close to a 25-17 loss against the Wyoming Cowboys at home, dropping the squad to just 1-4 in league play and 3-3 in their own stadium this season.
Air Force won last year's battle by a score of 35-20, which means the academy now leads the all-time series by a count of 12-4.
Dionza Bradford ran for a career-high 152 yards and scored once on 20 carries for the Rebels last weekend, but it wasn't enough to keep the team from falling into the loss column yet again. The team as a whole generated a whopping 268 yards and two scores on the ground. A bigger part of the problem for UNLV was the lack of production from the so-called passing attack as Taylor Barnhill and Sean Reilly combined to hit 8-of-14 attempts for a mere 61 yards. At this point it doesn't much matter who is standing under center for the Rebels because the passing attack is simply nonexistent with an average of just 122.9 ypg, easily last in the conference and 117th in the nation this week. The big problem is that the offensive line is permitting an average of three sacks per game (109th nationally) and that's just unacceptable if you want to keep your signal-callers standing upright.
The UNLV defense made the Lobos look like superstars last weekend, permitting 274 passing yards and one touchdown through the air as well as two touchdowns to running back Demarcus Rogers, someone who has gained just 222 rushing yards and now scored a total of three TDs this entire season. The Rebels did manage to post a couple of sacks in the meeting, both coming from James Dunlap, but there were few other highlights for the Rebels against an opponent that entered the game with the longest losing streak in the nation. The run defense has actually been pretty tight for the Rebels this season, limiting opponents to a modest 167.9 ypg, but that only looks good when compared to what the pass defense has been able to accomplish. Through nine games the Rebels have permitted 278.8 ypg through the air which is last in the MWC and 109th in the country this week.
The Falcons entered the game against Wyoming averaging better than 450 ypg in total offense, but somehow the Pokes rose up and limited the academy to just 311 yards, basically because Air Force ended up turning the ball over four times. With quarterback Tim Jefferson sent to the sidelines with a head injury that now has him listed as questionable for this week's battle, the Falcons turned to Connor Dietz who was less than spectacular as a passer with just two completions for minus-one yard and an interception. Mike DeWitt helped to carry the running game with two touchdowns, but gaining a total of 312 yards on 63 attempts was still not good enough for the Falcons. It is no secret that the Falcons run the ball almost exclusively, averaging 310.6 ypg to rank first in the conference and fourth in the nation, but given the status of Jefferson who has actually provided the group with a reasonable passing attack, expect to see the academy do what it does best this weekend.
Air Force just couldn't get a good enough handle on Wyoming quarterback Brett Smith as the signal-caller threw for 139 yards and one touchdown and carried the ball 16 times for 75 yards and another two scores as the Falcons gave up 212 yards on the ground. Being pushed around on the ground is nothing new for Air Force, seeing as how the squad is fifth in the MWC and 111th in the nation in rushing yards allowed (218.5 ypg) but you would think that for a team that practices running the ball as much as it does, just maybe the defensive line would pick up some pointers and know how to better attack opponents at the line of scrimmage. In any event, Air Force is now last in the nation in tackles for loss with just 3.4 per game and is 106th in sacks with just 1.2 per outing as well.
As long as the Falcons are running the ball and controlling the clock, UNLV has little chance of delivering an upset, especially on the road where the Rebels have been so awful the last few years.
