GAME NOTES: The Utah Utes will try to extend a three-game winning streak this weekend when they travel to Pullman to take on the Washington State Cougars in Pac-12 play.
Utah became bowl eligible after last week's 31-6 dismantling of UCLA, which marked the third straight win for the Utes after victories over Oregon State and Arizona in the two weeks prior. John White had another terrific game at running back for Utah last week, and the defense is peaking at the right time of the year, holding UCLA to less than 300 total yards in last week's win. Utah will close out its inaugural season in the Pac-12 next weekend at home against Colorado.
Washington State snapped a five-game losing streak last weekend in an 37-27 upset win over Arizona State in Pullman. It was a significant win for the Cougars, who kept their bowl hopes alive behind a 494-yard passing game from quarterback Connor Halliday. Washington State needs to win its last two games of the season to sneak into a bowl, and following Saturday's home finale against the Utes, the Cougars will meet Washington in the Apple Cup next weekend to close out the regular season.
The series between Utah and Washington State is tied at 5-5.
White ran 33 times for 167 yards and two touchdowns for Utah last weekend against UCLA, and Utah registered 224 yards of total rushing. That kind of production on the ground was critical, considering quarterback Jon Hays completed just 5-of-13 passes for 67 yards. Hays added a touchdown, fittingly on a 13-yard strike to White. The junior running back is ninth in the country in rushing, averaging 119.1 yards per game, and has scored 12 touchdowns. He has rushed for 100 yards six times this season, and has one 200 yard rushing game.
White is the centerpiece offensively for Utah, which has had to overcome adversity of sorts this season with starting quarterback Jordan Wynn going down with a season ending injury mid-year. Utah has gotten by with Hays, but relies heavily on the services of White and the rest of the Utah rushing attack. The Utes average 137.1 yards rushing per game, which is tenth in the Pac-12. Utah ranks 12th in total offense with 307.3 yards per game, and posts 25.1 points per outing.
Utah's defense had its most complete game of the season last week against the Bruins. Utah contained UCLA quarterback Kevin Prince, who completed 12-of-24 passes for 146 yards and had two interceptions. One of those interceptions went the other way, as Conroy Black put an exclamation point on the win with a 67-yard interception return in the fourth quarter that sealed the win. UCLA put together 149 yards rushing on 43 carries, but struggled to put together sustained drives going just 4-of-15 on third down. Utah is third in the Pac-12 in total defense (335.7) and first in scoring defense (19.2), and the unit gets high pressure. Utah averages 2.8 sacks per game, which ranks 18th in the country.
Its no secret that Washington State's quarterback position has been hamstrung by injuries this season, but the freshman Halliday filled in nicely against Arizona State. Halliday completed 27-of-36 passes for nearly 500 yards and four touchdowns, and didn't throw an interception; he was complemented by stellar play out wide, as receiver Marquess Wilson caught eight passes for 223 yards and three touchdowns, while Isiah Barton caught seven passes for 155 yards and one score. Wilson's performance made him the school's all-time leading receiver.
Those are prime-time numbers even for Washington State's pass-happy spread offense, which has been near the top of the Pac-12 passing statistical categories all season. Washington State is ninth in the nation and second in the league with 318.7 passing yards per game, and overall average 430.4 yards of total offense with a 31 point per game average. Wilson has been the steady constant all season long for the Cougar's offense, averaging 6.7 catches per game (third in Pac-12) for 119.7 yards per outing (first in Pac-12). Wilson has 67 catches, which is tied-for third most in single season history at Washington State.
Washington State's defense gave up 351 yards passing last weekend to Arizona State quarterback Brock Osweiler, but the Cougars held the Sun Devils to seven points in the second half and kept Arizona State from converting on many third downs (5-of-16). Washington State also played the run well, giving up just 60 yards on 25 carries. Utah presents a different type offense and thus a different type challenge this weekend for Washington State's defense, which will have to key on stopping the run. The unit ranks eighth in the Pac-12 in run defense (155.8), total defense (412.4) and scoring defense (31.3). Alex Hoffman-Ellis and Deone Bucannon are a pair of top-ten tacklers in the conference for Washington State, as Hoffman-Ellis ranks sixth in the PAc-12 with 7.2 stops per game and Bucannon ranks eighth with 6.9.
Washington State's passing system proved it could win with a freshman last weekend. but Utah's defense is one of the league's finest and has played really well during the three-game winning streak. Not many teams have proven they can stop White either, which is why Utah has the edge in Pullman.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Utah 28, Washington State 24
