GAME NOTES: With the MAC East Division title already in the bag, this game is a mere formality for the Ohio University Bobcats, who will host the Miami-Ohio RedHawks in the regular-season finale for both teams tonight.
The RedHawks had a chance to make this game meaningful, but back-to-back 24-21 losses to Temple and Western Michigan, cost them a shot at a division title. Miami is 3-4 in league play and has just four wins on the year overall.
Because of Miami's loss to Western Michigan, all the Bobcats had to do was defeat Bowling Green and the division crown would be theirs. It wasn't easy, but thanks to a last-second field goal by Matt Weller, Ohio claimed a 29-28 decision, thus solidifying its spot in the MAC Championship Game.
The RedHawks own a 51-34-2 edge over Ohio in the all-time series, but the Bobcats have won the last five matchups, including a 34-13 decision last season in Oxford.
Miami's offense has been extremely inconsistent this year, which is why the team comes into this finale averaging a mere 22.0 ppg. The RedHawks are averaging a weak 75.0 rushing ypg and because of that, additional pressure has fallen on quarterback Zac Dysert.
Dysert has thrown for 3,141 yards, 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions this season, and Nick Harwell has been his primary target, as the receiver leads the team with 83 receptions, 1,262 yards and eight touchdowns.
In the recent loss to Western Michigan, the duo did the majority of the work for the offense, as Dysert threw for 413 yards and three scores, all three of which went to Harwell, who finished with 138 yards on 14 grabs. Unfortunately, the Miami ground attack was bottled up once again, as the team finished with just 53 yards on 22 carries.
The inconsistent offensive effort has overshadowed the performance of the defense, which is limiting teams to just 23.1 ppg. Miami yields 200 ypg through the air, but the problem for the unit has come against the run, as teams average 162.7 ypg and have scored 16 times on the ground.
However, in the loss to Western Michigan it was the secondary that had a nightmare showing, as the Broncos torched Miami for 429 yards and three touchdowns.
Linebacker Anthony Kokal was impressive as he logged 11 tackles, two TFL, one of which was a sack, and he forced a fumble. Kokal has been a tremendous leader all year, and he currently paced the team with 83 total stops.
What has hurt the RedHawks has been their one-sided offensive attack, but for the Bobcats that is certainly not an issue. Ohio, is one of the more balanced teams in the conference, and because of that the team enters this matchup averaging 32.9 ppg.
Ohio is averaging more than 200 rushing ypg and has done so with several players carrying the load, beginning with Donte Harden (795 yards). Ryan Boykin has 433 yards and Beau Blankenship has scored four times on the ground. However, the most important player in the rushing attack could be quarterback Tyler Tettleton, who has 465 yards and eight touchdowns.
Tettleton is also dangerous with his arm, throwing for 2,649 yards and 23 touchdowns. Even better, he has completed 63.7 percent of his throws and has tossed only six interceptions. LaVon Brazill has been his main option down field, as the wideout leads the team with 54 receptions, 868 yards and 10 touchdowns.
In the recent win over Bowling Green, it was all Tettleton once again as he rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown, while also throwing for 194 yards and another score. That touchdown pass went to Brazill, who finished with 43 yards on five catches.
Earlier in the year, the OU defense seemed shaky at best, and that was surprising considering how well this unit has played under coach Frank Solich over the years. However, as the season wore on, the defense improved and at this moment the Bobcats seem ready to face any test.
Up front, the Bobcats are limiting the opposition to just 129.4 rushing ypg on a mere 3.7 yards per carry. The secondary is allowing more than 200 ypg passing, and has surrendered 19 touchdowns. However, the unit has helped its own cause by reeling in 14 interceptions. As a collective unit, the defense has come up with 22 takeaways, but pressuring the quarterback has been an issue, as the Bobcats have just 15 sacks on the year.
Against Bowling Green, the OU defense allowed just 115 rushing yards, and even though the Falcons threw for 232 yards and three scores, the Bobcats were able to grab an interception and forced three turnovers overall. Noah Keller forced two fumbles in the win and recovered one, while finishing with 15 tackles. The veteran leader of this group now has a team-best 90 stops on the year.
Even though this game does not mean much to the Bobcats, they are still going to it seriously. The RedHawks should find success through the air, but expect the Bobcats to scratch out another victory.
