GAME NOTES: The Miami-Florida Hurricanes and Boston College Eagles close out disappointing seasons this weekend in the Sunshine State, as the two teams clash at Sun Life Stadium.
The Eagles got out of the gates slow with three straight losses this season and never recovered. League play was more of the same for Boston College, as the team posted a mere 2-5 mark in the ACC. BC took a break from conference action last week and actually played well before falling to Notre Dame in South Bend, 16-14.
The Hurricanes actually became bowl eligible with last weekend's ugly 6-3 win over South Florida, but the school had decided to not participate in the postseason due to an ongoing NCAA investigation. With the win over the Bulls, Miami moved to 6-5 on the season.
This is the 28th meeting in a series dominated by the Hurricanes, who have won 23 of the previous 27 matchups, including a 14-1 mark in Miami.
The Eagles lacked offensive punch even before All-American tailback Montel Harris went down with a knee injury. Without him, the numbers aren't pretty. Boston College enters this season-finale averaging just 17.6 ppg and 293.6 yards of total offense.
Rolandan Finch has taken over the primary duties in the backfield with a late season injury to Andre Williams and has been decent in spots, racking up 609 yards on the season.
The ground game isn't a huge threat in 2011, making QB Chase Rettig's job that much harder. Rettig has certainly struggled under center, completing just 52.3 percent of his throws, for 1,758 yards and 10 TDs against nine INTs.
The BC defense has done its best to keep the Eagles in games and the numbers aren't bad as a result. Opponents are averaging 24.1 ppg and just under 400 yards per outing.
The centerpiece of the unit is All-American linebacker Luke Kuechly. A finalist and perhaps favorite for the Butkus Award, Kuechly is the ACC's all- time tackles leader and will become the school's all-time leader in this contest. Kuechly currently leads the nation in tackles with an eye-popping 182. Eleven of them have come behind the line of scrimmage and he has two interceptions as well.
The Hurricane offense has been hugely disappointing this season and inconsistent at best. The team is averaging 27.4 ppg, but scored just six points in last week's win over the Bulls.
The unit certainly has playmakers, led by quarterback Jacory Harris. The veteran signal-caller has completed 65.9 percent of his passes for 2,241 yards with 19 TDs. Wideout Tommy Streeter is the top outlet down the field (41 catches, 764 yards, eight TDs).
The ground game is fueled by tailback Lamar Miller, who has developed into one of the ACC's best. Miller is averaging 5.4 yards per carry and has amassed 1,158 yards and eight TDs thus far.
Defensively, Miami has had a good amount of success, allowing just 19.7 ppg this year. While teams have been able to run the football, passing it has been much harder with the 'Canes allowing just 198.2 yards through the air on average.
Linebacker Sean Spence has had a tremendous season, leading the team with 92 tackles, 14.0 TFLs and three sacks. Marcus Robinson (35 tackles) is the team's top pass rusher, with five sacks.
The Eagles can't seem to move the ball, while Miami has been strong defensively. The Hurricanes should be able to end their season with a win, while BC heads into the off-season without a lot of questions.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Miami-Florida 24, Boston College 14
