GAME NOTES: The season will come to a close for two teams this Friday afternoon when the Buffalo Bulls host the Bowling Green Falcons in a Mid- American Conference tilt at UB Stadium.

The Falcons fell for the third straight time in their last matchup, as they were defeated by Ohio, 29-28. The loss was also the sixth in the last seven games for Bowling Green, which fell to 2-5 in conference action.

Also sitting at 2-5 in league play are the Bulls, who snapped a four-game slide with a 51-10 decision over Akron this past weekend. It was only the third win on the year for Buffalo, but all three victories came at home.

The Falcons hold a 5-3 edge over Buffalo in the all-time series, but the Bulls were victorious in the last meeting, as they defeated Bowling Green, 28-26.

The Falcons have been wildly inconsistent with the football this season, and that is because the offensive attack is very lopsided. The ground game has been hot and cold all year, and because of that the pressure for the unit has fallen on the shoulders of quarterback Matt Schilz.

Schilz has done his best in trying to lead the team to victory, but the signal caller has come up short more often than not. On the year the quarterback has thrown for 2,788 yards and 24 touchdowns, while tossing just 11 interceptions. Schilz does have a solid tandem at his disposal, Kamar Jorden and Eugene Cooper have proven to be two reliable options. Jorden is leading the team with 75 receptions, 1,015 yards and 10 touchdowns, while Cooper has pulled in 61 receptions for 718 yards and seven scores.

In the loss to Ohio, the quarterback for BGSU and his two favorite targets did everything they could to try to propel the team to victory, but their efforts were not enough. Schilz threw for 232 yards and three scores. Jorden and Cooper finished with one touchdown apiece, while combining for 15 receptions and 150 yards.

Obviously the team's inability to pose a dangerous combination of run/pass has hurt BGSU's chances at more victories, but so has the play of the defense, which comes into the final week allowing 28.9 ppg.

The biggest problem for this unit has come against the run, as opponents are gashing the Falcons for 204.8 ypg on the ground and have also scored 22 touchdowns against BGSU in that area. Bowling Green's inability to stop the run was evident in the team's loss to Ohio, as the Bobcats churned out 253 yards and scored once via the run.

Cameron Truss led the team with 10 tackles in the loss, but Dwayne Woods added nine stops to go along with his two fumble recoveries. Woods has been the best player on this defense from day one and is currently pacing the team with 96 tackles, 13 TFLs and also has two sacks.

While the Falcons have been a pass-happy offense, the Bulls have taken a more grounded approach on that side of the ball, as they rumble into this game averaging a robust 152.0 yards per matchup on the ground. Unfortunately the rushing attack is straddled with a weak passing game and because of that Buffalo is averaging just 21.6 ppg.

Branden Oliver has been one of the top running backs in the conference and comes into this weekend with 1,268 yards and 12 touchdowns. However, Chazz Anderson has done little to help the offensive cause, as the signal caller has just 11 touchdowns against eight interceptions.

The majority of the team's success in the win over Akron came on the ground, but that is not surprising. Oliver led the charge with 235 yards and two touchdowns, while Jeffvon Gill added 49 yards and one score. Anderson even rushed for a touchdown, and more importantly threw for two more in the contest.

The reason why Buffalo heads into its last game with only three wins is because the offense is very lopsided, but also because the defense has been abused in almost every game. Teams are pounding the Bulls for 186.8 ypg on the ground and have also scored 19 rushing touchdowns. However, the secondary should also be held accountable since that unit has surrendered 21 touchdowns thus far.

Fortunately the Bulls were pitted against Akron this past week, because playing the Zips would make any struggling defense look like a national juggernaut. Prior to holding Akron to just 10 points, the Bulls had surrendered 30 or more points in six straight games. Buffalo held Akron to just 239 total yards and even did a tremendous job against the run, allowing just 68 yards on 2.3 yards per attempt.

Khalil Mack was unstoppable in the win, as the linebacker finished with six tackles, two sacks and one forced fumble. Mack has been a force all season for Buffalo and comes into this game with 18 TFLs and 5.5 sacks, both of which are team highs.

The Bulls are susceptible against the pass, while the Falcons have trouble stopping the run. Even though Schilz and company should have impressive performances, look for Oliver to run the Bulls into the off season with a victory.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Buffalo 34, Bowling Green 32
