GAME NOTES: The Arizona State Sun Devils and California Golden Bears close out their regular season in the desert, as ASU plays host to California at Sun Devil Stadium.

Both teams are bowl eligible, but Arizona State still has a lot to play for, as the Sun Devils can still win the Pac-12 South. ASU, which has lost three straight games, needs to win this contest and have both Colorado lose to Utah and UCLA lose to USC. last weekend, ASU fell at home to rival Arizona, 31-27.

The Golden Bears' bowl scenarios are still up in the air, but California would like to end the season with a winning record here. The Golden Bears failed to secure that last weekend, losing 31-28 at Stanford.

California holds a narrow 16-14 edge in the series thanks to wins in the last three meetings.

California has enjoyed great balance on the offensive side of the football this season, averaging 412.4 yards per game. The ground game is responsible for 159.5 yards per outing, while the passing attack puts up 252.8 yards on average.

Quarterback Zach Maynard possesses great talent, but has been inconsistent at times this season. He has completed 55.8 percent of his passes this season for 2,565 yards and 16 TDs. Maynard's top target is actually his brother Keenan Allen, who leads the team with 84 catches, for 1,200 yards and six TDs.

The rushing attack is spearheaded by tailback Isi Sofele, who is averaging 5.3 yards per carry and has amassed 1,121 yards and eight TDs this season.

Like the offense, the Cal defense certainly possesses talent, but has at times struggled. On the season, the Bears are allowing 23.2 ppg and 326.9 ypg.

Mychal Kendricks leads the way with 88 tackles, with 11.0 TFLs, two sacks and two INTs. D.J. Holt has been equally productive, racking up 79 tackles, to go with 9.5 TFLs and two sacks.

Arizona State's offense is one of the better units in the Pac-12, as the team averages 33.5 ppg on 448.5 yards of total offense. The unit is fueled by a lethal passing attack that nets 314.4 yards per outing.

Quarterback Brock Osweiler has been outstanding this season, completing 63.7 percent of his throws, for 3,377 yards and 21 TDs. Gerell Robinson (61 catches, 1,100 yards, six TDs) and Jamal Miles (57 catches, 357 yards, six TDs) have been a solid one-two punch downfield.

The rushing attack plays second-fiddle in Tempe, but tailback Cameron Marshall (881 yards) is certainly capable of controlling the tempo of a game. He has scored 16 of the team's 21 rushing TDs to date.

ASU's biggest problems have come on the defensive side of the football, specifically against the pass, where foes are averaging 274.0 ypg.

This is not a unit without star power, as All-American candidate Vontaze Burfict is a playmaker in the middle. Burfict leads the Sun Devils in tackles (63), TFLs (7.0) and sacks (5.0).

This is a good matchup between a pair of inconsistent teams. While Cal would like to end the season on a high note, Arizona State is still playing for something.
