GAME NOTES: The Owls will close out their regular season at home on Friday when the Kent State Golden Flashes come to Lincoln Financial Field to battle Temple.
After a slow start to the season the Golden Flashes have really picked up steam, winning four in a row, and one more victory would bring the team to .500 and make KSU bowl eligible. The last time the Golden Flashes were on the field they claimed a slim, 28-22 decision over Eastern Michigan.
As for the Owls, they might not be in contention for the MAC title game, but they are eligible for bowl action and one more victory should solidify the team a spot in postseason action. After losing two in a row, the Owls have bounced back with two straight victories over Miami-Ohio and Army.
The Owls have won the last two matchups against Kent State and now own a 3-2 edge over the Golden Flashes in the all-time series.
The Golden Flashes might have won four in a row, but overall the offense has been dreadful, so the fact the team has claimed four straight is rather impressive. Kent State is producing only 243.5 total yards per contest and that has led to a mere 17.2 ppg.
The ground game is averaging a lackluster 108.5 ypg, and the passing attack has not been able to pick up the slack. Spencer Keith has completed less than 50.0 percent of his passes and comes into this weekend with only 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
The last time KSU was in action the team was not overwhelming offensively, but the Flashes did enough to earn a win over Eastern Michigan. Keith only completed 11 of his 25 passes, but he did finish with 173 yards and one touchdown. Keith also scored on the ground, while Trayion Durham also found the end zone.
The Flashes are winning mainly because of the performance on defense, as team is currently limiting the opposition to just 23.4 ppg. Kent State is holding opponents to just 122.3 rushing yards per matchup, and more importantly the Flashes have pulled in 14 interceptions, while allowing just 11 passing touchdowns.
Overall the Flashes have forced 29 turnovers, which is one of the top totals in the nation. Luke Wollett is currently leading the team with four interceptions, while Calvin Tiggle has collected three fumbles.
Kent State was able to force four more turnovers in its win over Eastern Michigan, and even though the defense allowed 194 yards on the ground, the Golden Flashes were able to hold EMU to just 84 passing yards.
The Owls have find plenty of success offensively, and because of that the team is averaging 29.7 ppg. Temple has relied heavily on the run though, and that is possible only because of players like Bernard Pierce and Matt Brown.
Pierce is currently leading the way with 1,192 yards and has scored 22 touchdowns, while Brown has helped out with 835 yards and five more scores. That tandem has picked up for the passing attack, which is averaging just 124.2 ypg.
The last time Temple was in action the team used a heavily dose of the run, as the Owls rumbled for 335 yards and five touchdowns against Army. Pierce led the way with 157 yards and three touchdowns, while Brown contributed 133 yards and two more scores. Chris Coyer, who is the third quarterback to start for Temple this year threw for 79 yards and one touchdown.
The rushing attack for Temple has dominated the highlights throughout the season, but the defense has been just as impressive, if not more. The Owls are currently limiting the opposition to just 13.6 ppg, and has done an excellent job against the pass, holding opponents to just 186.8 ypg through the air. Temple has surrendered 10 passing touchdowns, but has hauled in 12 interceptions, giving the team 18 takeaways on the year.
Temple has also bottled up the run for the most part, holding teams to just 124.4 ypg on 3.6 yards per carry. However, against Army the defense faltered against the run, but that is not surprising since the Black Knights run 90 percent of the time. In the win over Army, the Owls allowed 340 yards on 5.7 yards per carry.
Stephen Johnson led the way in the win with 16 tackles, while Kevin Kroboth added 12 stops. Johnson has been a monster for this defense and comes into this game with 99 tackles.
The Golden Flashes have relied heavily on their play defensively, and they should be able to limit Temple's dangerous rushing attack, but eventually the Owls should score enough to win the game, especially since Kent State lacks any real punch offensively.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Temple 17, Kent State 7
