GAME NOTES: The Louisville Cardinals look to keep their Big East Championship hopes alive as they travel to Tampa to take on the South Florida Bulls in a Black Friday bout.
Louisville took down Connecticut 34-20 in its last outing to stay in the race for the Big East crown. Head coach Charles Strong's team is currently tied for the lead in the Big East with Rutgers as both squads own a 4-2 conference record. Louisville owns the tie-breaker with the Scarlet Knights due to a 16-14 victory over Rutgers when the two squared off on October 21st. West Virginia, Connecticut, and Pittsburgh are just half a game behind in the standings as their seasons will not end until next weekend. The Cardinals hold the tie-breaker over West Virginia and Connecticut due to wins in the head-to- head matchups, but will need the Panthers to lose to clinch the conference title. Pittsburgh faces its rival West Virginia this week before returning home to host Syracuse in its season finale.
South Florida has lost five-of-six after starting the season out with four straight wins. Skip Holtz's Bulls most recent defeat came in a low scoring matchup with in-state rival Miami. South Florida has just one Big East victory this season, which came over Syracuse on November 11th.
The Bulls and Cardinals have met eight times in the all-time series. South Florida holds a 5-3 advantage in the series after winning 24-21 in an overtime contest in 2010.
Louisville has one of the weaker offensive attacks in the nation as it is ranked 106th in total offense. The Cardinals are averaging 20.6 points per game which ranks near the bottom of the conference. Louisville has been held under 300 yards for two-straight games.
The offense is led by Teddy Bridgewater, who completed 14-of-22 attempts for 174 yards in his last outing. The freshman quarterback has thrown for 1,614 yards, nine touchdowns, and nine interceptions this year.
Vic Anderson and Dominique Brown are the main options in the ground attack for Louisville. Anderson leads the team with 442 yards, while Brown is close behind with 413. Michaelee Harris is the team's leading receiver with 438 yards on 35 catches.
The Cardinals have remained competitive this year due to a strong defensive effort. Louisville is holding opponents to 18.7 points per game which ranks 12th in the nation. The Cardinals' average of 329.4 yards of total offense allowed per game ranks 23rd in the country. Louisville has held its opponent under 300 yards of total offense six times this year, and only once has a team gained more than 400 yards. The defense has aggressive tendencies as it is ranked 19th in the nation with 30 sacks and 13th in the nation with 81 tackles for loss. Dexter Heyman, Hakeem Smith, and Preston Brown have all been big- time contributors to the defense's success as the three have combined for 227 tackles between them.
South Florida's offense that posted three straight games of 500 total yards of offense or more earlier in the season was ineffective last week against Miami. The Bulls gained just 249 yards of total offense, their lowest total of the season, and scored just three points in the loss.
B.J. Daniels has been the leader of the Bulls. Daniels had his worst game of the season against the Hurricanes as he threw for just 97 yards and an interception. The junior quarterback has accumulated 2378 passing yards and 12 touchdowns with six interceptions this season, but has not eclipsed the 300 yard passing mark in three games.
A big reason Daniels has struggled as of late is due to the absence of his favorite target Sterling Griffin, who suffered a season-ending ankle injury against Cincinnati. With Griffin out, Victor Marc and Deonte Welch have become the main options in the passing game. Marc and Welch are ranked 18th and 19th in the conference in receiving yards, respectively.
South Florida's ground attack is powered by Darrell Scott and Demetris Murray. Scott has a team best 668 rushing yards on 123 attempts. Murray has been effective as well with 462 yards on the ground and seven touchdowns.
The Bulls' defense has picked up the slack to keep the team in games. The defense held Miami to just six points and 316 yards of total offense in last week's loss. South Florida is extremely aggressive on the defensive side of the ball as it leads the nation in tackles for loss per game with an average of 8.8 and is second in the nation in sacks per game with an average 3.7. DeDe Lattimore leads the defense with 76 tackles.
All the pressure is on Louisville in this one. South Florida has continued to play hard until the very end. The last four losses by the Bulls have been by six points or less. Louisville has stumbled in games it was expected to win this season as it lost to FIU and Marshall at home. Holtz's squad has a good chance at ruining the Cardinals' Big East Championship hopes if Louisville does not leave it all on the field.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: South Florida 20, Louisville 17
