GAME NOTES: In what is obviously a down year in the Sunshine State, the Florida State Seminoles and Florida Gators meet in Gainesville in the regular- season finale for both teams.

Jimbo Fisher's Seminoles buried themselves in an ACC hole early on and were not able to climb out of it. The team did post five straight wins in the second half of the season but that streak ended last week at home against Virginia in a 14-13 loss.

Will Muschamp's first season in Gainesville has been a forgettable one. Usually in the mix for at least the SEC title, the Gators struggled to remain relevant for much of the season, including a disappointing 3-5 mark in the SEC. To emphasize Florida's struggles this season, the Gators needed last week's 54-32 win over FCS foe Furman just to become bowl eligible.

This is the 56th all-time meeting between these two teams, with Florida holding a 33-20-2 series advantage. FSU hasn't won in Gainesville since 2003.

Although it didn't show in last week's loss to Virginia, Florida State has had success offensively this season, averaging 32.6 ppg on just over 400 yards of total offense.

Quarterback E.J. Manuel has played well in stretches, completing 66.3 percent of his throws, for 2,352 yards and 16 TDs. The team lacks a true go-to-guy downfield, as Rashad Greene leads the team in receiving with a modest 33 catches, for 497 yards and six TDs.

The FSU rushing attack has also lacked a featured performer, but Devonta Freeman (487 yards, 5.3 ypc, six TDs) has shown flashes of brilliance.

While the Florida State offense has been inconsistent at times, the defense has been more stable. The Seminoles are allowing just 15.9 ppg this year, while shutting down both the run (84.4 ypg) and the pass (198.5 ypg).

Linebacker Niger Bradham paces the unit with 75 total tackles. He also has nine TFLs, two sacks, one INT and one fumble recovery. Defensive end Brandon Jenkins (37 tackles) is trouble up the field, leading the team in both TFLs (10.0) and sacks (7.0). Bjoern Werner (31 tackles, 9.0 TFLs, six sacks) has also shown the ability to get after the passer.

The Florida offense has had modest numbers this season, coming into the finale averaging 27.3 ppg on 347.8 total yards.

Despite throwing for a career-high four TDs last week, quarterback John Brantley has played to mixed reviews in 2011, completing just 58.9 percent of his passes, for 1,808 yards and 10 TDs.

There haven't been a lot of playmakers like in the past on offense for Florida this season, although Chris Rainey (748 yards rushing two TDs, 24 receptions, two TDs) and Jeff Demps (547 yards rushing, six TDs) have to be part of the gameplan.

Usually one of the nation's best, Florida's defense in 2011 has been just average. The team is allowing 20.5 ppg on the year, while showing some vulnerability against the run (141.6 ypg).

Linebacker Jon Bostic headlines the defense, with 81 total tackles, 6.0 TFLs, 3.0 sacks and one forced fumble. Safety Matt Elam ranks second in tackles (64) and first in TFLs (8.5) and INTs (tied with two).

This is certainly not what either team expected heading into the season, but this still holds bragging rights in the state of Florida. The Gators have the advantage of getting this one in Gainesville, but FSU has the better quarterback and a strong defense.
