GAME NOTES: For the 10th consecutive season the Tennessee Volunteers find themselves closing out another campaign with their annual date against the Kentucky Wildcats in an SEC battle at Commonwealth Stadium.
Tennessee has won 26 straight games over the Wildcats which is the second- longest win streak between Division I programs behind only Penn State and Temple, with the Nittany Lions having taken 29 in a row over the Owls. The Volunteers have had their share of stumbling blocks in 2011, but last weekend the team delivered a thrilling 27-21 overtime win against Vanderbilt to keep hope alive for the postseason. Heading into the finale, Tennessee is 5-6 and needs a victory in order to become bowl eligible.
As for the Wildcats, they are again on their way to another season of below .500 football. Last week the team put up a fight against Georgia on the road but still had to accept the 19-10 loss. The defeat was the second in a row and the third in four games for a team which is just 1-6 in SEC play just like Tennessee.
Tennessee leads the all-time series between the teams by a count of 74-23-9 and has not lost at Commonwealth Stadium since 1983, a stretch of 14 straight games. However, the last two matchups in the stadium have both gone to overtime. The 74 wins in the series are the most for the Vols against any one opponent.
Quarterback Tyler Bray gave the Volunteers a fighting chance against Vanderbilt last weekend as he converted 16-of-33 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns, although he did throw a couple of picks and was sacked once which is why Tennessee finished the meeting with just 101 net rushing yards. Da'Rick Rogers reeled in 10 balls for 116 yards and both scores for the Vols. Tauren Poole also had a hand in the scoring for the unit as he carried the ball 19 times for 107 yards and a TD as well. For Poole it was his third 100-yard rushing game of the season and the ninth of his career. Poole leads the team with 66.1 yards and five rushing TDs, but this is a group that is averaging a mere 92.7 ypg and that ranks them last in the SEC and 117th in the country this week.
It all came down to defensive back Eric Gordon and his interception of Jordan Rodgers during the first possession of overtime and after officials decided that Gordon's 90-yard run should stand, the Vols had reason to celebrate. Gordons interception return for a touchdown in overtime was the first defensive score in OT since 2005 when Ohio DB Dion Byrum picked off Tyler Palko of Pittsburgh and took it the distance. Malik Jackson forced a fumble that led to Tennessees first touchdown of the contest and Austin Johnson picked off his team-best fourth pass in five games to give the defense a spark. Austin Johnson leads the team in tackles after 11 games with a total of 74 stops, just ahead of A.J. Johnson who has 71 takedowns. Jackson (49) has a team-best nine tackles for loss and has been credited with 10 quarterback hurries as well.
Against the 13th-ranked team in the nation last week, Kentucky had the support of all those other teams in the SEC that were unable to pull off upset wins and while the Wildcats came close, they too bowed to the Georgia Bulldogs. As well as the Wildcats defense performed, the Bulldogs were just a bit better on that side of the ball as they limited Kentucky to just 165 yards of total offense. Quarterback Maxwell Smith hit on 17-of-34 passes for 133 yards and a score, but he was also picked off twice which kept the Wildcats from being more aggressive. Even though Smith kept the Wildcats from falling too far behind, the fact remains that the Kentucky passing attack has been fairly weak this entire season, averaging just 146.6 ypg to rank last in the conference and 110th in the nation. Add to that a rushing scheme that is generating only 117.1 ypg (98th) and you have an offense that is posting a mere 16.4 ppg.
With Georgia as one of the more productive offenses in the conference, it was a bit surprising to see the Wildcats limit the hosts to just 317 yards, the second-lowest total of the season for the Bulldogs. Danny Trevathan had a lot to do with Georgia stumbling from time to time as he tied a career-high with 17 tackles, making three stops behind the line of scrimmage, forcing a pair of fumbles and registering a sack for the visitors. It wasn't until the fourth quarter that Georgia was able to get into the end zone on a seven-yard scoring pass, which was a testament to just how hard the Wildcats were willing to play. One of the top tacklers in the entire nation, Trevathan has a staggering 135 stops through 11 games, his four interceptions and five forced fumbles also leading the way for the Wildcats. Winston Guy has 106 tackles of his own, 12 of those for loss.
With the spark that the Vols were able to generate with their thrilling win last week and the fact that they continue to dominate Kentucky year after year, a win for Tennessee this weekend would not be out of the question.
