GAME NOTES: The UAB Blazers head to Boca Raton for a late season non- conference meeting with the Florida Atlantic Owls at FAU Stadium.
UAB is coming off of a big upset win over the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles. The win was the second straight for the Blazers as they beat Memphis the week before for their first road win of the year. Neil Callaway's team had struggled until the game against the Tigers as they now own a 3-8 record for the year. The Blazers hope to finish out the season strong against the Owls in their season finale.
FAU is still winless after 10 games. Howard Schellenberger's Owls have only lost by a single digit margin once this year. FAU has only managed one touchdown in each of its last two games. The Owls have two more chances to get a victory as they play host to UAB this week and to ULM next week in their finale.
FAU leads the all-time series with UAB as it holds a 2-1 advantage. The Owls won by a narrow margin in 2010 as they edged the Blazers 32-31.
The Blazers' offense has been hot lately as it gained 601 yards of total offense against Memphis before compiling 425 yards of total offense in the win over Southern Mississippi. UAB had its first and second highest scoring outputs in the back-to-back wins as it scored 41 at Memphis before posting 34 on the Golden Eagles.
After two disappointing performances in-a-row against Marshall and Houston, Jonathan Perry surprised many by completing 29-of-48 passes for 410 yards and four touchdowns against the Tigers. He followed that showcase by connecting on 17-of-26 attempts for 236 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 49 more and another score against Southern Miss. The six total touchdowns were accompanied by zero interceptions. It is a shame Perry's breakout did not occur earlier in the season as UAB could have faired better earlier in the season with the rejuvenated Perry.
Greg Franklin has done his part in the victories as well as he rushed for 73 yards and 85 yards with a touchdown in each victory. Those totals were two highest of the season.
Freshman receiver Jamarcus Nelson is starting to make a name for himself in the Conference USA. The rookie wide out was a vital part of the Memphis win as he caught six passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns. Earlier in the season Nelson caught two passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns. If his big play abilities are properly utilized, the Blazers could see some big performances out of him in this one and beyond.
The Blazers' defense is ranked near the bottom in every statistical category. Opponents are averaging 36.6 points and 491.9 yards of total offense per game against UAB. The defense has allowed opponents to score 30 points or more in its last two outings, and 50 points or more in its two contests before that.
FAU is ranked 120th in the nation in scoring average and total offense with 11.7 points and 242.1 yards per game. The Owls began their season with a nearly impossible non-conference schedule as they went on a three-game road trip to face Florida, Michigan State, and Auburn. During the trip FAU scored 17 points total. The scoring increased slightly once the Owls hit conference play, but has completely disappeared as of late.
Morris Alfred is a bright spot on the offense as he has rushed for 100-plus yards in four-straight games. The senior tailback has 916 rushing yards this season. Alfred rushed for 1392 yards in his sophomore season before being held under the 1000-yard mark last year. Morris is the school's all-time leader in rushing yards, total touchdowns, rushing touchdowns, and in all-purpose yards.
The passing game for the Owls has not been as successful. Graham Wilbert has struggled in his first-year as a starter as he has thrown 14 interceptions and only seven touchdown passes. Wilbert has thrown seven of those interceptions in the last four games.
FAU's defense has allowed 30 points or more in all of their games with the exception of the 20-0 loss to Western Kentucky. Opponents have not had trouble moving the ball against the Owls as they have given up an average of 390.1 yards of total offense per game.
FAU might have been able to beat UAB earlier in the year when the Owls were playing with more spirit and the Blazers were slumping. UAB has found its groove late in the season behind the great play of Perry. The Blazers should be able to close out its season with a three-game winning streak.
