DeKalb, IL (Sports Network) - Chad Harnish threw for 195 yards and five touchdowns as the Northern Illinois Huskies routed the Army Black Knights, 49-26, in a non-conference game at Huskie Stadium.
Jasmin Hopkins ran for 138 yards for the Huskies (1-0) on 14 carries, and five different players caught touchdown passes in the win.
Malcolm Brown ran for 92 yards on nine carries for Army (0-1), while Trent Steelman was 5-of-11 through the air with one interception for 86 yards.
The hosts took a quick 7-0 lead early in the opening quarter when Courtney Stephen took a blocked Army punt 16 yards to the end zone for a Northern Illinois touchdown.
Trenton Turrentine answered for Army with a 14-yard touchdown run late in the period to bring the Black Knights within a point at 7-6. The extra point attempt was unsuccessful.
The Huskies extended their lead to 14-6 when Harnish hit Luke Eakes with a 13- yard scoring pass with just over a minute left in the opening quarter. Harnish then found Nathan Palmer on a 19-yard scoring strike to make it a 21-6 game just seconds into the second quarter.
Harnish and Akeem Daniels connected on a six-yard scoring pass to extend the Huskies' lead to 28-6 just over two minutes later before Harnish scored himself on a one-yard run with just over seven minutes left in the first half.
Harnish started the second half with his fourth touchdown pass of the game, a 58-yard throw to Jamal Womble with just over 10 minutes left in the third period that extended the Huskies' lead. Harnish's four-yard pass to Martel Moore late in the quarter made it a 49-6 game.
Steelman scored for Army on a two-yard run early in the fourth quarter, and Malcom Brown added a one-yard touchdown of his own midway through the final stanza to make it a 49-20 game.
The Black Knights added a touchdown in the closing seconds when Max Jenkins found Jared McFarlin on an 11-yard toss.
The Huskies were 11-of-13 on third-down conversions. Northern Illinois piled up 509 yards in total offense, exactly 100 more yards than Army.
