San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Zach Maynard threw for 266 yards and two touchdowns as the California Golden Bears topped the Fresno State Bulldogs, 36-21, in a non-conference game at Candlestick Park.
Maynard was 16-of-35 through the air for the Golden Bears (1-0). Marvin Jones caught five passes for 118 yards and two scores, while Keenan Allen hauled in eight balls for 112 yards.
Robbie Rouse ran for 86 yards on 17 carries for Fresno State (0-1) and scored a touchdown. Derek Carr was 21-of-33 through their air for 142 yards and a score. Devon Wylie caught five passes for 75 yards.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring when Rouse reached the end zone on a nine-yard run with 13:16 left in the opening period.
Sofele responded for the Golden Bears with a pair of rushing touchdowns from one and 39 yards out. Both point after kicks were blocked, but Cal still owned a 12-7 advantage.
The Golden Bears extended their lead when Maynard found Jones on a 42-yard scoring pass to make it a 19-7 game with 1:31 still to go in the opening stanza.
The lead shrunk to 19-14 when Sofele fumbled and the Bulldogs' Cristin Wilson recovered in the California end zone with 4:16 left in the half.
The Golden Bears widened their lead in the third quarter. Maynard found Jones on a 23-yard scoring effort at the 9:17 mark before Trevor Guyton took a Fresno State fumble 22 yards to the end zone with 4:21 left in the period to make it a 33-14 game.
Giorgio Tavecchio's 40-yard field goal with 8:16 left in the game extended Cal's advantage.
Carr hit Josh Harper with a seven-yard touchdown pass with 3:29 remaining to cap the scoring.
The Golden Bears totaled 413 offensive yards and averaged 6.0 yards per offensive snap.
