Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - Keith Wenning threw for 173 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Ball State Cardinals to a 27-20 win over the Indiana Hoosiers in a non-conference game at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Wenning was 23-of-29 through the air without an interception. Jahwan Edwards ran for 84 yards on 16 carries for the Cardinals (1-0), while Torieal Gibson caught five balls for 57 yards.

Edward Wright-Baker was 20-of-32 through the air for Indiana (0-1) for 272 yards and a touchdown.

The Hoosiers got on the board immediately, as Matt Perez concluded the first drive of the game with a nine-yard touchdown run at the 8:56 mark of the first stanza.

Ball State answered back when Wennington hit Barrington Scott with a one-yard scoring pass just 40 seconds into the second quarter.

The Hoosiers responded when Wright-Baker connected with Damarlo Belcher on a 65-yard scoring pass with 12:58 left in the first half.

Wennington sneaked in from a yard out to lift Ball State into a 14-14 tie at the 7:11 mark of the period.

Indiana regained the lead when Mitch Ewald booted a 49-yard field goal with 3:17 left until halftime.

The Cardinals rallied after intermission. Steve Schmidt's 38-yard field goal tied the game at 17 with 9:25 left in the third quarter before Wenning hit Connor Ryan on a 20-yard scoring strike at the 3:38 mark to put Ball State up 24-17.

Schott's 22-yard field goal with 2:16 left in the game produced the only points of the final period.

Both teams had coaches making their debuts. Pete Lembo won his first game at Ball State while Kevin Wilson was coaching his first game at Indiana.
