NCAA Game Summary - San Jose State at U-C-L-A

Final Score: San Jose St 17 - U-C-L-A 27

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Derrick Coleman rushed for 135 yards and one touchdown to lead the UCLA Bruins to a 27-17 victory over the San Jose State Spartans in non-league action at the Rose Bowl.

Johnathan Franklin added 81 yards and one score for UCLA (1-1), which finished with 272 rushing yards on 42 carries. Richard Brehaut threw for just 145 yards on 12-of-23 passing in the win, but the signal caller also tossed one touchdown.

Dasmen Stewart had a rough game for SJSU (0-2), as the quarterback completed just 15-of-31 passes for only 111 yards. Stewart was also intercepted once in the loss for the Spartans, who own the nation's longest losing streak at 12 games. It was not a total failure for this offense though, as the Spartans rushed for 202 yards. Brandon Rutley led the way with 81 yards and found the end zone once, while David Freeman chipped in with 52 yards and scored once as well.

The Bruins took a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter on a one-yard touchdown plunge by Franklin.

San Jose State evened the score early in the second quarter when Freeman scored his own one-yard touchdown.

UCLA regained the lead when Brehaut connected with Joseph Fauria on a 14-yard scoring strike. UCLA's 14-7 advantage would stand strong as the two teams went into intermission.

The Spartans cut their deficit early in the third frame on a Harrison Waid 25- yard field goal.

Once again though the Bruins responded, this time with a 38-yard field goal by Kip Smith.

Less than two minutes later the Spartans tied the game at 17 apiece when Rutley broke free and scampered down field for a 65-yard score.

UCLA was in a dogfight through three quarters, but the final frame belonged to the Bruins, as they scored 10 straight points en route to the win.

The first score was a easy 20-yard field goal by Smith midway through the quarter. However, the game winning score came on an impressive 24-yard touchdown run by Coleman with just over three minutes remaining in regulation.
