Bloomington, IN (Sports Network) - Robert Randolph kicked a 23-yard field goal as time expired to give the Virginia Cavaliers a 34-31 win over the Indiana Hoosiers in a non-conference matchup at Memorial Stadium.
Perry Jones had a big night for the Cavaliers (2-0), rushing for 78 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries and catching five passes for 85 yards. Michael Rocco was 15-of-29 through the air for 191 yards.
Edward Wright-Baker was 16-of-30 through the air for the Hoosiers (0-2) for 171 yards and a touchdown, but was picked off once and sacked three times on the night. The signal-caller also ran for 48 yards on 15 carries. D'Angelo Roberts rushed for 48 yards on 11 carries while Duwyce Wilson caught five balls for 60 yards and a score.
Randolph opened the scoring for the Cavaliers with a 42-yard field goal midway through the opening period.
Mitch Ewald tied the game for Indiana with a 37-yard field goal conversion of his own a minute into the second quarter.
Randolph's 44-yard effort put Virginia back in front 6-3 two minutes later.
Kevin Parks scored the game's first touchdown for the Cavaliers on a one-yard run in the final minute of the first half. Following a fumble, Virginia extended its lead to 16-3 when Randolph kicked a 23-yard field goal to close the half.
Parks extended Virginia's lead to 23-3 with a six-yard touchdown run two minutes into the third quarter.
Matt Perez brought Indiana closer when he scored on an eight-yard run with nine minutes left in the third quarter and scored again on a one-yard burst in the opening minute of the fourth.
The Hoosiers took the lead when Lawrence Barnett returned a Jones fumble 54 yards to the end zone and Ewald added the extra point to put Indiana up 24-23 with 12 minutes remaining in regulation.
Indiana extended its lead when Wright-Baker hit Wilson with an 18-yard scoring pass with six-and-a-half minutes left.
Jones atoned for his earlier misfortune when he barreled into the end zone from three yards out with 1:36 remaining in regulation. A successful two-point conversion tied the game at 31-31.
The winning field goal was set up when Wright-Baker lost the ball on a sack, giving the Cavaliers the ball at the Indiana 14-yard line with 1:13 remaining in regulation.
Virginia prevailed despite converting just six of 15 third-down opportunities.
