Kalamazoo, MI (Sports Network) - Alex Carder completed 28-of-37 passes for 355 yards and three touchdowns, helping lift the Western Michigan Broncos to a 44-14 rout over the Central Michigan Chippewas in the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams at Waldo Stadium.
Jordan White had 13 catches for 177 yards and two scores to help the Broncos (2-1, 1-0 MAC) end a five-game slide against their in-state rival.
Ryan Radcliff threw for 215 yards on 20-of-36 passing for Central Michigan (1-2, 0-1).
Western Michigan jumped all over the Chippewas with three first-quarter touchdowns. Carder opened the scoring with an eight-yard touchdown pass to White at the 9:47 mark of the first quarter.
CMU went three and out on its next possession, and White returned the punt down to the Chippewas' four-yard line. On the very next play, Carder found Chleb Ravenell for a four-yard touchdown pass to make it a 14-0 game.
The Broncos extended their lead to 21-0 on a one-yard touchdown plunge by Antoin Scriven at the 3:03 mark of the opening frame, capping an eight-play, 76-yard drive.
Broncos kicker John Potter accounted for the only points of the second quarter with a 33-yard field goal in the final seconds to send his team into the locker room with a 24-0 halftime lead.
The Chippewas got on the scoreboard on the first play of the second half thanks to their defense. Joe Kinville forced a fumble by Carder, and CMU's Jahleel Addae scooped up the ball in the end zone to trim the margin to 24-7.
Carder responded by leading his team on a nine-play, 70-yard drive and scored on a two-yard run.
WMU pushed its lead to 38-7 on Carder's second touchdown pass to White, this time from 19 yards.
Potter tacked on a pair of 43-yard field goals for the Broncos in the fourth quarter, and CMU's Tim Phillips scored on a 28-yard run to account for the final margin.
WMU enjoyed a 442-362 edge in total offense for the game, as the Broncos were able to keep the chains moving by converting 10-of-15 third downs. They came away with touchdowns on five of their six trips to the red zone.
