Final Score: Louisville 24 - Kentucky 17
Lexington, KY (Sports Network) - Teddy Bridgewater threw for a pair of touchdowns as the Louisville Cardinals defeated the Kentucky Wildcats, 24-17, in the annual Governor's Cup meeting at Commonwealth Stadium.
Bridgewater finished the night 10-of-18 for just 106 yards, surviving three sacks in order to help the Cardinals (2-1) capture their first win of the season over another member of the Football Bowl Subdivision. Fellow quarterback Will Stein completed 2-of-4 passes for another 40 yards and a score as well.
The Wildcats (2-1) were led by Morgan Newton who converted 27-of-41 passes for 255 yards and two scores, but he was under constant pressure and sacked a total of six times, leaving the squad with a mere 35 net rushing yards on 32 attempts.
Kentucky put the first points of the night on the board as Craig McIntosh capped a seven-play, 58-yard drive with a 20-yard field goal a little over three minutes into the first quarter.
The Cardinals then posted back-to-back touchdowns thanks to a 38-yard passing strike from Stein to Andrell Smith and a 25-yard TD toss from Bridgewater to DeVante Parker to make the score 14-3.
With time winding down in the first half, Morgan put together an 80-yard drive for the hosts in a mere 62 seconds, culminating with a 15-yard touchdown pass to La'Rod King to cut the deficit to 14-10 at the break.
In the third quarter the only points came from Louisville kicker Chris Philpott on a 20-yard field goal.
The Cardinals added to their lead early in the fourth with a 25-yard scoring pass from Bridgewater to Josh Bellamy, pushing the lead to 24-10.
The ensuing possession for Kentucky ate up more than six minutes on the clock, covered 77 yards on 15 plays and ended with a two-yard TD pass from Morgan to E.J. Fields, but that's as close as the Wildcats would get in the seven-point setback.
