Albuquerque, NM (Sports Network) - Seth Doege threw for 401 yards and five touchdowns and Texas Tech overcame two weather delays to trounce New Mexico, 59-13, in non-conference action at University Stadium.
Doege was deadly accurate for Texas Tech (2-0), completing 40-of-44 passes and no interceptions, his 90.9 percent completion percentage a national record for quarterbacks who have completed at least 40 passes in a single game. Darrin Moore caught nine passes for 118 yards and three touchdowns, while Eric Ward added eight catches for 87 yards and two scores.
Lightning suspended play twice, for a total of 95 minutes, but New Mexico (0-3) couldn't regroup or keep up with the Red Raiders. Quarterback Tarean Austin completed 8-of-24 passes for 187 yards and an interception, while Crusoe Gongbay was the leading rusher with 61 yards on a day when Texas Tech outgained the Lobos 624 to 337 in total offense.
Doege, who converted his first 15 pass attempts of the meeting to tie a school record, hit Moore with two touchdown passes within the fist six minutes, including a 56-yard scoring strike on the first drive of the game. Doege made it 21-0 after finding Ward for a one-yard touchdown pass at the 14:24 mark of the second quarter, following a 17-play, 92-yard drive.
On the next drive for Tech, receiver Austin Zouzalik hit Moore on a 26-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 28-0.
Gongbay found the end zone from two yards out to cut the UNM deficit to 28-7 with 7:56 remaining in the half.
Texas Tech ripped off 24 unanswered points following that score, which included a 23-yard Donnie Carona field goal and two touchdown passes from Doege to Ward and Jace Amaro. Running back Ronnie Daniels registered a nine- yard touchdown run with 12:41 remaining to finish the Red Raiders assault for the night, extending the score to 59-7.
New Mexico, which has been outscored 125-26 in the first three games of 2011 and now lost five in a row going back to last season, capped the scoring with a pair of James Aho field goals in the fourth quarter.
