Final Score: Tulane 49 - U-A-B 10
Birmingham, AL (Sports Network) - Junior quarterback Ryan Griffin bounced back from last week's struggle against Tulsa by completing 22-of-26 passes for 281 yards and three touchdowns as he led the Tulane Green Wave to a resounding 49-10 win over the UAB Blazers in Conference USA action at Legion Field.
Tulane (2-1, 1-1 C-USA) completely outplayed UAB (0-2, 0-1) as the Green Wave compiled 540 yards of total offense, while holding the Blazers to just 193 on the day.
Orleans Darkwa rushed for 64 yards and two touchdowns for the Green Wave as the visitors generated 262 yards on the ground. Defensively, Trent Mackey had an outstanding game for the Green Wave as he tallied nine tackles and returned an interception for a touchdown.
UAB quarterback Bryan Ellis struggled to produce as he only completed 10-of-25 passes for 145 yards. Ellis also threw two interceptions that turned into touchdowns for the opposition.
After failing on a forth down conversion on their first offensive possession, the Green Wave forced a quick UAB three and out. Tulane then converted on their second try as Darkwa ran into the end zone from four yards out.
The Tulane lead did not last very long as Nick Adams returned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards for a Blazers touchdown to even the score at 7-7.
Tulane countered immediately by putting together a 10-play, 66-yard drive that concluded with Darkwa crossing the goal line for the second time in the quarter.
The Green Wave defense contributed in the second quarter as Mackey returned an Ellis interception 39 yards for a score to extend the lead to 21-7.
A quick six-play, 98-yard drive by the Green Wave, using just 1:37 on the clock, put the visitors up 28-7 with just over five minutes remaining in the first half as Griffin hit Wilson Van Hooser for a 17-yard touchdown, giving the visitors a commanding lead at the break.
UAB opened the second half with another drive into Green Wave territory, the result of the possession being a 32-yard Ty Long field goal to make the score 28-10.
The Tulane offense continued to thrive in the second half as Griffin connected with Joe Kemp for a 19-yard scoring strike in the third quarter, followed by a one-yard TD toss to Matt Marfisi at the 10-minute mark of the fourth period.
On the next UAB possession the Green Wave defense again stepped up and made a big play as Derrick Strozier returned an interception 55 yards for the final touchdown of the contest and a commanding 39-point win for Tulane.
UAB, which converted just 3-of-10 on third down, controlled the ball for a mere 18:03, including a paltry 1:38 in the first quarter.
