Moscow, ID (Sports Network) - Derek Carr threw for 371 yards and five touchdowns as the Fresno State Bulldogs rolled to a 48-24 win over the Idaho Vandals at the Kibbie Dome in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both schools.
Carr was 24-of-37 through the air with two interceptions as the Bulldogs (2-2, 1-0 WAC) won their second straight. Jalen Saunders caught five passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns, while Rashad Evans caught seven balls for 81 yards and a score. Robbie Rouse rushed for 112 cards on 25 carries.
Brian Reader was 22-of-38 through the air for the Vandals (1-3, 0-1) for 235 yards and two scores. Michael LaGrone caught five balls for 57 yards,
The Bulldogs opened the scoring when Carr connected with Saunders on a 16-yard touchdown throw five minutes into the opening quarter.
Idaho answered back when Reader hit Clayton Homme on a three-yard toss with four-and-a-half minutes left in the period.
The Bulldogs regained the lead when Kevin Goessling booted a 48-yard field goal at the three-minute mark.
The Vandals moved back in front just over four minutes into the second quarter when Princeton McCarty dashed 18 yards for a score to give his team a 14-10 advantage.
Fresno State moved back in front when Carr and Saunders hooked up again, this time on a 51-yard touchdown connection to give the Bulldogs a 17-14 lead midway through the period.
Trey Farquhar's 23-yard field goal moved Idaho into a 17-17 tie at the six- minute mark before Carr's one-yard TD toss to Marcel Jensen with two minutes remaining in the half gave the Bulldogs a 24-17 lead at the break.
The Bulldogs extended their lead three-and-a-half minutes into the third quarter when Goessling connected on another 48-yard field goal. Carr notched for his fourth touchdown pass of the contest when he found Evans on a 33-yard throw with six-and-a-half minutes left in the quarter to give Fresno State a 17-point edge at 34-17.
It became a 41-17 game when the Bulldogs' Nat Harrison recovered a fumble and took it 40 yards to the end zone just before the third quarter ended.
Reader cut the Fresno State lead to 41-24 when he connected with Kama Bailey on a seven-yard scoring pass in the opening minute of the final period.
Carr hit Josh Harper with a nine-yard scoring pass with four minutes left to finish the day's scoring.
FSU collected 513 yards in total offense. The Bulldogs converted three of their four fourth-down opportunities and scored touchdowns all three times they reached the red zone.
