San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - San Jose State snapped a lengthy 13-game losing streak with a 34-24 victory over New Mexico State in Western Athletic Conference action at Spartan Stadium.
San Jose State's Brandon Rutley was crucial in the victory for the Spartans (1-3, 1-1 WAC) as he exploded for 209 yards rushing on 33 carries and trotted into the end zone twice. Matt Faulkner contributed significantly as he completed 24-of-38 passes for 236 yards and two scores. For SJSU, which had dropped 10 straight WAC outings, the victory halted the longest losing streak in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
Matt Christian led the Aggies (1-3, 0-1) as he completed 17-of-28 attempts for 238 yards and a score. Christian also ran for 58 yards and reached the end zone once on the ground. Kenny Turner accounted for 129 yards and a touchdown on 17 attempts, while Taveon Rogers racked up 187 all-purpose yards.
New Mexico State scored on its first possession to take an early lead as Tyler Stampler knocked through a 19-yard field goal to give the visitors an early 3-0 advantage.
On the next play from scrimmage, Brandon Rutley found a seam in the Aggies' defense and ran 66 yards for a touchdown for the hosts.
Neither team could get much going after the initial scores in the first half until a Dasmen Stewart fumble gave NMSU the ball in Spartan territory. The Aggies took advantage of the short field by orchestrating a touchdown drive which ended with an 18-yard TD pass from Christian to Turner.
SJSU kicker Jens Alvernik connected on a field goal from 42 yards away for the Spartans to tie the score at 10-10 with just 17 seconds left in the half.
Ryan Otten grabbed a Faulkner pass and dashed 64 yards into the end zone on the second play of the half to give the Spartans a 17-10 advantage.
It only took the New Mexico State offense four plays to respond as Christian completed three passes before crossing the goal line himself on a nine-yard run to tie the score at 17-17 less than three minutes into the third quarter.
Turner and the Aggies struck again about four minutes later as he raced to the end zone on a 78-yard run to put the visiting team up, 24-17.
San Jose State responded by putting together a 14-play, 75-yard drive that culminated with a three-yard TD pass from Faulkner to Otten for the score. Otten's second touchdown reception of the quarter tied the score at 24-24 with just over three minutes remaining in the third period.
San Jose State turned to the rushing attack and on his sixth straight run of the drive, Rutley scored from two yards out to put the Spartans on top by a touchdown a minute into the final quarter. Later in the stanza Alvernik connected on a 31-yard field goal to give the Spartans some insurance in their double-digit triumph
The Aggies hurt themselves with penalties, flagged a total of eight times for 76 yards while the Spartans were penalized just once for five yards.
