NCAA Game Summary - Houston at UTEP

Final Score: Houston 49 - Texas-El Paso 42

El Paso, TX (Sports Network) - Case Keenum threw two touchdowns passes while Charles Sims ran in two scores and added a receiving touchdown as Houston outgunned UTEP, 49-42, at the Sun Bowl.

Keenum went 30-for-46 with 471 yards while Sims had 12 carries for 111 yards for the Cougars (5-0, 1-0 C-USA), who are averaging over 45 points a game this season. Michael Hayes had 10 carries for 100 yards and a score in the win.

Nick Lamaison threw three touchdown passes and was picked off once as he finished 19-for-29 with 267 yards and Joe Banyard had 240 yards and a score on 22 carries for the Miners (2-3, 0-2), who have dropped their past two games.

A Banyard 68-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter cut the Miners' deficit to 38-35, but Matt Hogan kicked a 29-yard field goal on the following possession to give Houston some breathing room.

Following a short possession from UTEP, Keenum threw a short pass to Sims, who took it all the way home on an 84-yard score with about 9 1/2 minutes to play. The two-point conversion was successful and it was a 49-35 game.

UTEP answered with a Leilyon Myers two-yard run, making it a one-score game with over six minutes to play.

The Miners then forced a punt from the Cougars and got the ball to the Houston 23, but a pass on 4th-and-14 fell incomplete and Houston killed the rest of the clock.

Nathan Jeffery scored on a 22-yard catch and a 10-yard run in the first quarter to give the Miners a 14-0 lead after 15 minutes.

Houston, though, scored three straight times in the second to take the lead. Sims had touchdown runs of 40 and four yards while Marcus McGraw returned a fumble 34 yards to give Houston its first lead of the game with 3 1/2 minutes left in the second.

Lamaison, though, tied the game before the halftime break when he found Mike Edwards on a 21-yard score.

An 18-yard field goal from Hogan on the opening possession of the second half gave his team the lead, but UTEP answered on a 29-yard touchdown catch from Craig Wenrick.

E.J. Smith, though, caught a 23-yard score to give Houston a lead it never gave back and a 71-yard run from Hayes with just over three minutes remaining in the third gave his team a 38-28 lead.
