Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Juwan Thompson scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns, the last with 6:52 remaining in regulation, to give the Duke Blue Devils a 31-27 come-from-behind win over the FIU Panthers in a non-conference game at FIU Stadium.
Sean Renfree threw for 335 yards and two touchdowns as the Blue Devils (3-2) won their third straight game. Conner Vernon caught eight balls for 117 yards, while Donovan Varner hauled in seven balls for 111 yards.
Wes Carroll was 25-of-39 through the air for the Panthers for 348 yards and three touchdowns. Wayne Times caught seven balls for 54 yards and a touchdown, while T.Y. Hilton hauled in five passes for 102 yards and a score. Darriet Perry rushed for 102 yards on 17 carries.
Duke took a quick 3-0 lead on Will Snyderwine's 27-yard field goal five minutes into the opening quarter.
The Panthers took a 7-3 lead when Carroll found Hilton with a 63-yard touchdown pass on the next offensive snap.
Duke regained the lead when Renfree hit Vernon on a 26-yard touchdown throw just inside the seven-minute mark.
Carroll responded for the Panthers with a 15-yard scoring pass to Jon Faucher with three minutes still left in the period.
Renfree's 22-yard pass to Cooper Helfet gave Duke a 17-14 lead with just under a minute left in the quarter.
FIU tied the game on Jack Griffin's 36-yard field goal with four minutes left until halftime.
A 33-yard effort from Griffin gave the Panthers a 20-17 lead just seconds before the end of the third quarter.
Carroll hit Times on a 34-yard touchdown strike 90 seconds into the final period to give the Panthers a 27-17 lead.
Thompson scored for Duke on a six-yard run a minute-and-a-half later to cut the FIU lead to 27-24, then added the game winner five minutes later from nine yards out.
The winning touchdown was set up when Carroll was sacked by Jordan DeWalt- Onjido and fumbled. Anthony Young-Wiseman returned the fumble to the FIU nine- yard line. Young scored on the next play.
Duke prevailed despite accumulating just 49 net rushing yards. Duke was outgained 568-384.
