Houston, TX (Sports Network)- Taylor McHargue threw for 170 yards and a touchdown and ran for 44 additional yards as the Rice Owls downed the Memphis Tigers 28-6 in a Conference USA encounter at Rice Stadium.

McHargue was 15-of-22 with two interceptions as the Owls (2-3, 1-1 C-USA) snapped a two-game losing streak. Luke Wilson caught five passes for 58 yards and a score, while Tyler Smith ran for 97 yards on 14 carries.

Two quarterbacks saw time for Memphis (1-5, 0-2). Taylor Reed was 15-of-30 for 100 yards, while Andy Summerlin, who took over in the fourth quarter, was 9- of-13 for 137 yards. Reed tossed two interceptions in the loss and the pair was sacked five times between them. Tannar Rehrer caught a career-high 11 balls for 89 yards but the Tigers still lost their third straight.

Rice took a 7-0 lead when Turner Petersen scored from a yard out with 5:34 left in the first quarter.

The Tigers got on the board when Paulo Henriques booted a 50-yard field goal with 30 seconds left in the opening period.

The Owls extended their lead when McHargue hit Wilson with a 15-yard touchdown pass with just 38 seconds left in the first half.

Rice built on its lead in the third quarter when Jared Williams picked off a Reed pass and returned it 47 yards for a score at the 10:33 mark.

Petersen scored his second touchdown of the game from a yard out at the 4:57 mark.

Henriques kicked a 30-yard field goal to make it a 28-6 game just seconds into the fourth quarter.

The Rice defense held Memphis to just 70 rushing yards. The Tigers were just 3-of-16 on third-down conversions.
