Birmingham, AL (Sports Network)- Tyler Russell threw for 166 yards and three touchdowns as the Mississippi State Bulldogs downed the UAB Blazers 21-3 in a non-conference game at historic Legion Field.

Russell was 11-of-13 through the air, while Vick Ballard rushed for 101 yards for the Bulldogs (3-3) who had lost three of their last four coming into this week. Chad Bumphis caught four passes for 66 yards and a touchdown.

Pat Shed rushed for 73 yards for the Blazers (0-5) on 15 carries, and caught five passes for 32 additional yards. Jonathan Perry was 18-of-36 for 195 yards through the air and ran for 44 additional yards.

Ty Long gave the Blazers a 3-0 lead on the strength of a 37-yard field goal with nine seconds left in the first half. It marked the first time all season UAB had the lead at halftime.

The Bulldogs got on the board on Russell's 18-yard pass to Marcus Green with 5:35 left in the third quarter.

Russell hit Bumphis on a 57-yard touchdown connection 10 seconds into the fourth quarter, then found Malcolm Johnson on a 20-yard pattern with 5:03 left in the game.

Mississippi State didn't turn the ball over all day and averaged 6.3 yards per offensive snap. The Blazers hurt their cause with seven penalties for 79 yards.
