Laramie, WY (Sports Network) - Brett Smith threw two touchdown passes to lead Wyoming over UNLV 41-14 in Mountain West Conference action at War Memorial Stadium.
Smith also rushed for 59 yards for Wyoming (4-2, 1-0 Mountain West), and Alvester Alexander contributed 74 yards and a touchdown in Wyoming's conference opener. Chris McNeill made his mark in the second half, returning a punt for a touchdown and passing for another score.
Dionza Bradford led UNLV (1-5, 0-1) with 104 yards on 22 carries, and Tim Cornett added two rushing touchdowns for the Running Rebels, who lost its third straight game. Quarterback Sean Reilly completed only 7-of-16 passes for 79 yards with an interception.
Smith completed a 41-yard touchdown pass to Dominic Rufran for the first score of the game, and Alexander extended the lead to 13-0 at the 9:56 mark of the opening frame on a one-yard touchdown run.
Smith struck again with just seconds remaining in the quarter, this time finding Spencer Bruce for a 15-yard touchdown to give Wyoming a 20-0 lead heading into the second stanza.
The Running Rebels fought back in the second. Cornett gave UNLV their first points as he rushed three yards for a score at the 7:03 mark to make it 20-7, then scored again from nine yards out with 3:12 remaining in the half to cut the Cowboys' lead to 20-14.
Wyoming made it a two possession game at the 9:10 mark of the third quarter when kicker Daniel Sullivan connected from 24 yards out to make it 23-14.
The Cowboys pulled away when McNeill returned a punt 76 yards for a touchdown, which gave Wyoming a commanding 30-14 lead with 2:50 remaining in the third.
Ten seconds into the final frame, Wyoming put it out of reach when the receiver McNeill completed a 28-yard touchdown pass to Smith on a trick play that extended the Wyoming lead to 38-14. Sullivan added a 28-yard field goal with 6:18 remaining.
Wyoming outgained UNLV 355-to-258 yards. The Running Rebels were penalized nine times for 73 yards, while the Cowboys were penalized just once for five yards.
