NCAA Game Summary - Memphis at Tulane

Final Score: Memphis 33 - Tulane 17

New Orleans, LA (Sports Network) - Memphis snapped its four-game losing streak behind the leadership of Taylor Reed, as the Tigers defeated Tulane 33-17 in a Conference USA matchup at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Reed completed 14-of-26 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns as Memphis (2-6, 1-3 C-USA) won its first conference game of the season. Billy Foster led the Tigers in rushing and receiving with 58 yards in each statistical category. Tannar Rehrer caught five passes for 57 yards with a touchdown. The 33 points are the most scored by Memphis since a 35-20 victory over UTEP in 2009.

Tulane (2-6, 1-3) has now lost five straight. Mark Hutson made his coaching debut for the Green Wave as he was named interim head coach after Bob Toledo resigned on Tuesday.

Tulane's Ryan Griffin completed 31-of-50 attempts for 377 yards and a touchdown, but also threw two interceptions. Orleans Darkwa played exceptionally well as he rushed for 84 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries and had a career-high 112 receiving yards on seven receptions. Griffin also targeted Wilson Van Hooser often as the sophomore receiver caught six passes for 100 yards, both career-highs.

Memphis struck first at the five minute mark of the opening quarter as Reed completed a two yard pass to Justin Henderson for a touchdown to give the Tigers a 7-0 advantage.

Tulane's first points came at the 11:58 mark of the second quarter when placekicker Cairo Santos was successful on a 23-yard field goal.

The Tigers extended their lead when Reed completed a 19-yard pass to Rehrer for a touchdown. Reed's second scoring pass of the game gave the Memphis a 14-3 lead with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half.

The Green Wave found the end zone for the first time with 2:45 remaining in the second quarter when Darkwa rushed seven yards for a touchdown to cut the Memphis lead to 14-10 as the game approached halftime.

Tulane took its only lead when Griffin completed a 29-yard touchdown pass to Van Hooser less than three minutes into the second half. The score capped off an 80-yard drive and put the Green Wave up 17-14.

The Memphis defensive unit bounced back on its next opportunity. Freshman defensive back Bobby McCain recorded his first career interception and returned it 79 yards for a touchdown. Paulo Henriques's extra point attempt following the return was blocked to keep the Green Wave within a field goal with 8:51 left in the third quarter.

After a blocked punt gave Memphis the ball inside their opponents 10-yard line, Reed snuck it in for a touchdown on a crucial fourth and one. Despite Henriques failure to convert the extra point attempt, the Tigers' score gave the visitors a 26-17 lead at the third quarter's 4:40 mark.

The only score of the fourth quarter came on a 22-yard touchdown run by Foster that added to the Memphis lead and sealed the 33-17 victory for the Tigers.

Despite losing, Tulane outperformed Memphis offensively, gaining 459 yards of total offense to the Tigers' 289. Memphis has now beaten Tulane in six- straight contests and seven of the last eight encounters.
