Final Score: Utah 10 - California 34
San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - The California Golden Bears dominated on both sides of the football and made light work of Utah, routing the Utes at AT&T Park, 34-10 in Pac-12 action.
The Golden Bears (4-3, 1-3 Pac-12) earned their first conference win of the season, halting a three-game skid and winning for the first time since a September 17th victory over Presbyterian (63-12).
California racked up nearly 400 yards of total offense (384), while limiting the visiting the Utes to just 178 yards, including a mere 13 rushing and forcing four turnovers. Quarterback Zach Maynard led the way, going 19-of-29 passing, for 255 yards and one TD, with another on the ground. Maynard's brother, wideout Keenan Allen, led all receivers with eight catches, for 78 yards and a touchdown.
Utah (3-4, 0-4) is still in search of its first Pac-12 victory, as the team struggled to sustain drives, losing the time of possession battle by 10 minutes (24:59 to 35:01). Utah quarterback Jon Hays had a miserable outing, completing just 11-of-22 passes, for 148 yards, with three interceptions and a fumble. Tailback John White IV struggled as well, finishing with a mere 39 yards, although he did record a TD on 15 carries.
The two teams played a scoreless first quarter, but California made up for the slow start by scoring 34 unanswered points, including 20 in the second frame. Tailback Isi Sofele started the scoring deluge for Cal with a five-yard TD run early in the second quarter, capping off a 12-play, 77-yard drive. A pair of Giorgio Tavecchio field goals followed, 35 and 37 yards, respectively. Maynard found Allen for a 12-yard touchdown with under 30 seconds to play in the second quarter, giving California a 20-0 lead at the break.
Utah was held to just two first downs in the first half and -6 yards rushing.
Maynard made it 27-0 Cal midway through the third quarter on a four-yard TD run.
The Cal defense got into the act early in the fourth quarter when Josh Hill intercepted Hays and returned it 32 yards for the final score for the Golden Bears.
Utah finally got on the scoreboard at the 11:16 mark of the fourth quarter with a 36-yard field goal by Coleman Petersen and made it 34-10 a little over 10 minutes later, with White's 14-yard touchdown run.
