Final Score: Colorado State 35 - U-N-L-V 38
Las Vegas, NV (Sports Network) - Caleb Herring's five-yard touchdown run with 1:20 remaining in the fourth quarter was just what the UNLV Rebels needed as they slipped by Colorado State in a 38-35 Mountain West Conference contest at Sam Boyd Stadium.
Herring finished the meeting with 22 yards on five rushing attempts and hit on 9-of-13 passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns for the Rebels (2-5, 1-1 MWC) as they snapped a three-game slide. Dionza Bradford contributed 122 yards and a score on 21 carries as the Rebels produced a hefty 244 yards on the ground.
The Rams (3-5, 1-2) were paced by Pete Thomas who converted 17-of-30 passes for 230 yards and a score, but he was picked off once and sacked four times in the contest. Also having a strong game for the visitors on the ground was Chris Nwoke who recorded a game-high 156 yards and scored once on 23 rushing attempts.
UNLV began the day's scoring with a 43-yard field goal by Nolan Kohorst, but the Rebels offense sputtered just a few minutes later when Shaquil Barrett intercepted a pass and returned it 52 yards with 5:14 to play in the first quarter to give the Rams a 7-3 advantage.
On the ensuing kickoff, returner Deante' Purvis gave the Rebels some excitement with a 98-yard return for a touchdown, making the score 10-7.
CSU kicker Chad VanderMolen knocked through field goals of 40 and 23 yards in the second quarter to give the Rams a 13-10 advantage.
However, before the first half could end, Herring hooked up with Phillip Payne on an eight-yard TD pass play to turn the lead back over to the hosts at 17-13.
The teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter with Thomas combining with Crockett Gillmore on a one-yard pass play on the first possession of the half, while Herring and Payne matched up again for the Rebels, this time on a 31- yard TD play to make the score 24-20.
Less than three and a half minutes into the fourth quarter, Bradford finished off a five-play, 73-yard drive with a one-yard TD run for the Rebels, but the double-digit lead was short-lived.
Midway through the period Thomas crossed the goal line from 12 yards out for the Rams and a few minutes later it was Nwoke with a four-yard score to give Colorado State the 35-31 lead before Herring guided the Rebels back and provided the hometown favorites with the three-point victory.
