NCAA Game Summary - Mississippi State at Kentucky

Lexington, KY (Sports Network) - Tyler Russell and Chris Relf combined for 264 yards through air and two scores as the Mississippi State Bulldogs downed the Kentucky Wildcats 28-16 at Commonwealth Stadium in Southeastern Conference action.

Russell, who started the game, was 9-of-12 for 172 yards and a score while Relf, who alternated with him, was 6-of-9 for 92 yards and a touchdown. Vick Ballard ran for 90 yards on 18 carries as the Bulldogs (4-4, 1-4 SEC) won for the first time in five conference games. Malcolm Johnson caught three balls for 42 yards and a touchdown.

Maxwell Smith was 26-of-33 through the air for the Wildcats (3-5, 0-4) for 174 yards. Smith, a freshman, came on in the first quarter when Morgan Newton suffered an ankle sprain and was lost for the game. Matt Roark caught a career-high 13 passes for 116 yards but the Wildcats still lost for the fifth time in their last six games.

Craig McIntosh gave Kentucky a 3-0 lead on a 32-yard field goal midway through the first quarter.

Relf responded for the Bulldogs with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Ricco Sanders with five-and-a-half minutes left in the period. Relf then ran three yards for a touchdown on the last play of the quarter to give the hosts a 14-3 lead.

McIntosh booted another 22-yard field goal with eight-and-a-half minutes left in the first half, before Relf's 12-yard run a minute-and-a-half later gave Mississippi State a 21-6 lead.

McIntosh added a third field goal, this one from 35 yards, to cut the Mississippi State lead to 21-9 with eight minutes left in the third quarter.

Russell's 13-yard pass to Johnson gave the Bulldogs a 28-9 advantage at the four-and-a-half minute mark.

Jonathan George scored for Kentucky on a four-yard run just over a minute into the fourth period to cut the Mississippi State lead to 28-16.

Kentucky had a huge edge in time of possession, 37:00-23:00. The Bulldogs prevailed despite three turnovers.
