Tulsa, OK (Sports Network) - Tulsa stayed perfect in Conference USA action as Willie Carter set career highs in receptions and receiving yards with 13 catches for 173 yards in the Golden Hurricane's 38-7 victory over SMU at Chapman Stadium.
Carter was targeted by G.J. Kinne often as Tulsa (5-3, 4-0 C-USA) won its fourth straight game. Kinne completed 24-of-36 passes for 274 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Alex Singleton scored a career high three rushing touchdowns as he logged 42 yards on 16 attempts. Defensive back Milton Howell also had a career day with three interceptions.
Zach Line led the offense with 169 all-purpose yards (118 rushing, 51 receiving) and a rushing touchdown as SMU (5-3, 3-2) lost its second straight after its five-game winning streak was snapped last week by Southern Mississippi. The Tulsa defense had J.J. McDermott frustrated as he threw four interceptions and completed only 17-of-37 passes for 180 yards.
Tulsa scored first with 6:34 remaining in the first quarter when Kevin Fitzpatrick made a 22-yard field goal. Later in the period, Singleton rushed into the end zone from two yards out to give the Golden Hurricane a 10-0 advantage after one quarter of play.
The Golden Hurricane extended their lead in the second quarter just moments into the second period when Kinne rushed two yards for a score. Then with 5:32 remaining in the half, Singleton punched it in from one-yard out to cap a 73- yard drive that put Tulsa up 24-0.
SMU finally found the end zone at the 10:38 mark of the third quarter when Line ran 17 yards for a touchdown that cut Tulsa's lead to 24-7.
Tulsa put the game out of reach with a pair of touchdowns later in the third quarter. Singleton ran a yard into the end zone for his third score of the game, then Kinne completed a 40-yard touchdown pass to Carter to make it 38-7. Neither team scored in the final period.
Tulsa dominated the offensive battle compiling 451 yards of total offense to the Mustangs' 265 yards on the day.
