El, Paso TX (Sports Network) - Jamal Woodyard ran for 134 yards and a touchdown as the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles bested the Texas-El Paso Miners 31-13 in a Conference USA affair at Sun Bowl Stadium.
Austin Davis finished with 190 yards and three touchdowns through the air for the Golden Eagles (7-1, 3-1 C-USA), who have won six straight.
Nick Lamaison was 21-of-35 for 194 yards for the Miners (4-4, 1-3) who saw a two-game winning streak snapped.
Southern Mississippi took the early lead on Danny Hrapmann's 27-yard field goal with 8:25 left in the opening quarter.
The Miners fumbled the ensuing kickoff to give the Golden Eagles the ball in the red zone. Davis found Ryan Balentine on a one-yard pattern to give Southern Mississippi a 10-0 lead at the 7:29 mark.
The Miners got on the board when Leilyon Myers scored from a yard out with 2:22 left in the period.
Dakota Warren tied the game for UTEP with a 25-yard field goal with 6:16 left in the first half.
Southern Mississippi took the lead for good when Davis found Quentin Pierce on a 47-yard scoring pass with 11:55 left in the third period.
Warren's 47-yard field goal at the 7:35 mark cut the Golden Eagles' lead to 17-13.
Davis hooked up with Dominique Sullivan on a 15-yard scoring play with 11:32 left in the game.
Woodyard finished the scoring with a 68-yard run at the 8:32 mark.
The Miners were limited to just 68 net rushing yards.
