Greenville, NC (Sports Network) - Dominique Davis threw one touchdown pass and ran for two more as he led the led the East Carolina Pirates to a 34-13 win over the Tulane Green Wave in Conference USA action at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
Davis, who completed 29-of-46 passes for 329 yards, also rushed for 43 yards for East Carolina (4-4, 3-1 C-USA) as the Pirates compiled 461 yards of total offense.
Tulane (2-7, 1-4), which has lost six straight games, was paced by Orleans Darkwa with 89 rushing yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Quarterback Ryan Griffin, who was sacked four times, completed 16-of-31 passes for 132 yards and an interception. Tulane's defensive unit was led by Trent Mackey who recorded 15 tackles and recovered a fumble.
The Pirates struck first as Davis rushed five yards for a touchdown with just over four minutes left in the opening quarter.
Tulane got its first points with under a minute remaining in the first frame when Cairo Santos made a 20-yard field goal to cut the Pirates' lead to 7-3 heading into the second period.
The offenses traded touchdowns to start the second quarter as Darkwa rushed seven yards for a score at the 13:34 mark to give the Green Wave their first lead. But the Pirates answered shortly thereafter when Davis threw a one-yard touchdown pass to Lance Lewis to make it 14-10.
Tulane made it a one-point game with 5:48 left in the first half when Santos connected on a 26-yard field goal attempt. East Carolina kicker Mike Barbour matched his counterpart with a field goal from 35 yards out to put East Carolina up 17-13 at the half.
The Pirates created some space on the scoreboard in the third quarter. Barbour knocked through a 20-yard field goal at the 6:22 mark and then Davis took it upon himself to cross the goal line from six yards out to put the Pirates up 27-13. Michael Dobson scored on a one-yard run for the Pirates to complete the strong offensive finish for the hosts.
East Carolina has now won three straight games and leads the all-time series against Tulane, 9-2.
