Huntington, WV (Sports Network) - A.J. Graham threw for 239 yards and five touchdown passes to lead the Marshall Thundering Herd in a 59-14 rout of the UAB Blazers in a Conference USA meeting at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
Graham completed 19-of-27 in the win for Marshall (4-5, 3-2 C-USA), which has notched a victory in two of its last three outings. Troy Evans caught six passes for 106 yards and a pair of scores for the Herd, while Gator Hoskins grabbed two passes for 37 yards and a couple of TDs. Tron Martinez paced the Marshall ground attack with 54 yards on eight touches.
Jonathan Perry completed 18-of-33 pass attempts for 215 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions in the loss for UAB (1-7, 1-4). Darrin Reaves led the ground-game, which amassed just 70 total yards, with a 55-yard effort on 11 carries that included a touchdown.
The Herd jumped out to a 7-0 lead with a 16-yard scoring strike from Graham to Evans less than two minutes into the contest. A 26-yard Tyler Warner field goal late in the period gave the Thundering Herd a 10-0 advantage.
The second quarter was once again all Marshall as the squad rattled off 28 unanswered points, beginning with a three-yard scoring completion from Graham to Hoskins early in the stanza.
Midway through the frame, a 48-yard interception return by Omar Brown finished in the end zone and gave Marshall a 24-0 lead. Minutes later, Graham found Eric Frohnapfel with a four-yard TD toss to push the Thundering Herd further ahead, while a 23-yard scoring completion from Graham to Aaron Dobson gave Marshall a 38-0 halftime advantage.
The Blazers finally got on the board early in the third quarter thanks to a six-yard Nick Adams touchdown run.
The Herd responded less than two minutes later, however, taking a 45-7 lead with a 38-yard TD pass from Graham to Evans.
A 20-yard fumble return by Billy Mitchell midway through the frame extended the Marshall lead to 52-7.
Early in the final period of play, Rakeem Cato completed a 34-yard touchdown toss to Hoskins to put Marshall comfortably ahead, 59-7.
The Blazers added a five-yard Reaves touchdown run late in the stanza to account for the final score of the meeting.
UAB managed to convert just 2-of-11 on third down on the afternoon and came up empty on three attempts on fourth down as well.
