Final Score: Texas Tech 20 - Texas 52
Austin, TX (Sports Network) - Joe Bergeron carried 29 times for 191 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Texas Longhorns to a 52-20 rout over Texas Tech in a Big 12 matchup at Memorial Stadium.
The Longhorns (6-2, 3-2 Big 12) are now bowl eligible with their second straight win since dropping back-to-back contests to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State a few weeks ago. UT got the job done almost exclusively with the ground game, which churned out 439 yards (8.1 ypc) and six TDs on the day. Longhorns quarterbacks attempted only nine passes, which went for 156 yards and a score.
Seth Doege threw for 381 yards and two TDs for the Red Raiders (5-4, 2-4), who have dropped four of their last five and remain one win away from bowl eligibility. Ever since shocking previously unbeaten Oklahoma two weekends ago, Tommy Tuberville's team has been out-scored 93-27 over the last two contests.
After the teams traded field goals in the first quarter, Foswhitt Whittaker gave the Longhorns a 10-3 lead with a 12-yard touchdown run at the 13:17 mark of the second quarter.
Texas Tech answered with a seven-play, 61-yard drive but had to settle for three points on a 40-yard field goal by Donnie Carona. The Longhorns took control from there.
Whittaker scored his second rushing touchdown of the day on an eight-yard run with 8:33 to play until halftime. After a quick three-and-out by the Red Raiders, UT found the end zone again on a 12-yard run by D.J. Monroe at the 6:56 mark of the second quarter.
The Longhorns made it a 31-6 game on Bergeron's nine-yard rushing TD with 1:46 remaining until halftime. Bergeron scored again on a five-yard run at the 9:06 mark of the third quarter to push the Longhorns' lead to 38-6.
TTU scored its first touchdown of the day with 3:10 to play in the third quarter, as Doege found Eric Ward for an eight-yard score.
However, the Longhorns tacked on a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to ice the victory. Bergeron scored his third rushing touchdown of the day from 12 yards out with 14:53 to play in regulation, and Case McCoy connected with Darius White for a 31-yard touchdown with 5:48 remaining. Doege threw a one- yard touchdown pass to Darrin Moore in the waning moments to account for the final margin.
While Texas rolled up 439 rushing yards for the game, the Red Raiders were held to 30 rushing yards on 27 carries as a team. UT converted 7-of-9 third downs and scored touchdowns on all six of its trips to the red zone.
