Fort Collins, CO (Sports Network) - Abelardo Perez's 37-yard field goal with 5:49 left in regulation proved to be the difference as the San Diego State Aztecs edged the Colorado State Rams, 18-15, in am Mountain West Conference game at Hughes Stadium.
Ronnie Hillman rushed for 80 yards on 24 carries for the Aztecs (6-3, 3-2 MWC) who have won three of their last four. Ryan Lindley was 19-of-35 through the air for 154 yards and a score and in the process set new school and conference records for career passing yardage.
Chris Nwoke gained 232 yards and one touchdown for the Rams (3-5, 1-3) on 22 carries. Garrett Grayson and Pete Thomas were 9-of-22 through the air between them for a mere 52 yards. Thomas started the game but left in the second quarter with a knee injury as the Rams lost their fifth straight.
Nwoke opened the scoring by dashing 63 yards for a touchdown to put Colorado State up 7-0 with 6:20 left in the opening period.
The Aztecs responded when Lindley hit Alston Umuolo on a four-yard scoring pass with 21 seconds left in the period. Brian Stahovich hit Chad Young on a two-point conversion pass to put San Diego State in front at 8-7.
The Aztecs extended their lead to 15-8 when Walter Kazee scored from a yard out with 8:11 left in the first half.
Grayson's one-yard run with 9:45 left in the fourth quarter and his subsequent two-point conversion run lifted the Rams into a 15-15 tie.
Perez's game-winning kick capped an eight-play, 43-yard drive.
Lindley has now thrown for 11,494 yards in his career, breaking the conference record of 11,365 yards previously held by Max Hall of BYU, and the school record of 11,425 yards that had belonged to former Aztec Todd Santos.
