Final Score: Georgia Tech 38 - Duke 31
Durham, NC (Sports Network) - Tevin Washington rushed for 136 yards and one touchdown while leading the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets to a 38-31 victory over the Duke Blue Devils in an ACC bout at Wallace Wade Stadium.
Washington also threw for 185 yards for Georgia Tech (8-3, 5-3 ACC), but the majority of the success on offense came on the ground, as the team finished with 364 yards on 6.3 yards per carry. David Sims, who scored twice, added 66 yards, while Embry Peeples helped out with 64 yards and one touchdown.
Sean Renfree did everything he could to propel the Blue Devils to a victory, but the quarterback's efforts were not enough. Renfree led Duke (3-8, 1-6) with 250 yards and four touchdowns in the setback.
The Blue Devils wasted little time getting ahead of Georgia Tech, as Renfree connected with Conner Vernon for a 15-yard scoring strike early in the first quarter.
The Yellow Jackets responded with two straight touchdowns, as Sims found the end zone on a four-yard run, and Roddy Jones plunged across the goal line for a one-yard score.
Georgia Tech extended its lead to 21-7 early in the second stanza, as Sims scored once again, this time on a one-yard run.
Duke responded with a 13-play, 80-yard drive that was capped off by a 12-yard touchdown pass from Renfree to Donovan Varner.
The Yellow Jackets answered back with a long drive of their own, as Peeples capped off an 11-play, 94-yard drive with a one-yard score as time expired in the second quarter.
The Blue Devils cut their deficit to 28-17 early in the third frame when Will Snyderwine connected on a 35-yard kick.
Georgia Tech added a field goal on its own later in the quarter when Justin Moore drilled a 25-yard kick.
Renfree's three-yard touchdown pass to Cooper Helfet cut Duke's deficit to seven points, but the Yellow Jackets responded with a 39-yard touchdown run by Washington.
Once again though Renfree led Duke on a scoring drive, as the quarterback capped off the offense's success with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Helfet.
That would be the last touchdown for Duke, as the Yellow Jackets shut down the Blue Devils the rest of the way, en route to the win.
