San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Brandon Rutley ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns to lift San Jose State to a 27-24 non-conference victory over Navy at Spartan Stadium.
Matt Faulkner completed 33-of-44 passes for 345 yards and a touchdown for San Jose State (4-7). Rutley added eight catches for 101 yards, while Ryan Otten also had eight catches for 101 yards.
Quarterback Kriss Proctor led Navy (4-7) with 172 total yards, including 90 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Aaron Santiago added 62 yards rushing and one score, as Navy racked up 254 yards on the ground.
San Jose State jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. Jens Alvernik kicked a 44-yard field goal five minutes into the game, and Rutley followed up with a three-yard touchdown run at the 3:21 mark of the first stanza.
Navy countered with two unanswered touchdowns in the second quarter, taking a 14-10 lead after Proctor and Santiago scored rushing touchdowns on back-to-back drives. Proctor plunged in on a one-yard score, and Santiago tore off a 35-yard touchdown run with 7:15 remaining in the half.
Rutley found the endzone for the second time on a one-yard touchdown run with 2:48 remaining in the second quarter, and the Spartans extended its lead to 20-14 on Alvernik's 23-yard field with 32 seconds left before halftime.
Navy took over the lead in the third quarter, as Jon Teague hit a 24-yard field goal midway through the frame and Proctor followed with a two-yard touchdown run to give Navy a 24-20 advantage at the 2:05 mark of the third quarter.
Faulkner found Jabari Carr on a 13-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the fourth quarter, giving San Jose State the decisive score. Navy had just three possessions in the fourth frame, punting once and turning the ball over on downs twice.
