Laramie, WY (Sports Network) - Brett Smith rushed for 140 yards and two scores to lead the way for Wyoming, as the Cowboys defeated New Mexico, 31-10, in a Mountain West Conference bout at War Memorial Stadium.
Smith also threw for 212 yards and one touchdown for Wyoming (7-3, 4-1 MWC), while Alvester Alexander added 93 yards and one score on the ground.
B.R. Holbrook scored the lone touchdown for New Mexico (1-10, 1-5), as the quarterback finished with 48 rushing yards along with that touchdown. Holbrook also threw for 162 yards and was intercepted once.
The Cowboys took a 7-0 lead midway through the opening quarter when Smith connected with Brandon Miller for a 26-yard scoring strike.
Seconds into the second frame the Lobos were on the scoreboard thanks to a 29- yard field goal by James Aho. A five-yard touchdown run by Holbrook followed, giving New Mexico a 10-7 lead.
Wyoming went into the break with a 14-10 lead after Alexander scored on a three-yard run in the final minute of the second quarter.
The lone score in the third quarter came from the foot of Daniel Sullivan, as Wyoming's kicker booted a 34-yard kick, pushing the team's lead to 17-10.
Smith scored on runs of 10 and 69 yards, respectively, in the final frame, and that was enough for the Cowboys to cruise to the 21-point victory.
