Final Score: Akron 19 - Western Mich 68
Kalamazoo, MI (Sports Network) - Tyler VanTubbergen threw for 252 yards and six touchdowns, as Western Michigan cruised to a 68-19 victory over Akron.
Jordan White and Chleb Ravenell both had a pair of touchdown receptions for the Broncos (7-5, 5-3 MAC), who closed the season with consecutive victories.
Clayton Moore completed just 5-of-18 passes for 35 yards and lost four fumbles for the Zips (1-11, 0-8), who dropped eight in a row to end the season.
The game's opening drive set the tone, as Moore fumbled the ball away courtesy of a Drew Nowak sack. VanTubbergen capitalized with a 22-yard touchdown pass to White for a 7-0 Broncos lead.
John Potter made it 10-0 with a 26-yard field goal on Western Michigan's next possession, but Akron's special teams countered, pinning the Broncos at their own one-yard line on Zack Campbell's short punt.
On the next play from scrimmage, James Harvey and Manley Waller stopped Brian Fields in the end zone for a safety, making it 10-2.
Momentum in hand, A.J. Fox hit a 28-yard field goal on the Zips' next drive for a 10-5 game, but Western Michigan emphatically answered, scoring five consecutive touchdowns to take a 45-5 lead into the break.
VanTubbergen threw touchdown passes to Ravenell, White, Eric Monette and Dallas Walker during the surge, while Robert Arnheim capitalized on another Moore fumble with a 19-yard scoring strike to Ravenell.
Intermission did little to slow either the Broncos' momentum or Moore's ball control issues.
VanTubbergen ran for an eight-yard score on the opening drive of the second half, while Moore fumbled away the football on consecutive possessions.
Western Michigan capitalized with Matt Cutler's touchdown grab and Mike Perish's two-yard scoring plunge for a 66-5 lead.
The Zips found the end zone on their next drive with Jawon Chisolm's one-yard run and Troy Gilmer returned a Perish fumble 72 yards for a touchdown to make it 66-19.
But a late-game safety for the Broncos sealed the final margin.
