NCAA Game Summary - Kent State at Temple

Final Score: Kent State 16 - Temple 34

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Bernard Pierce ran for a season-best 189 yards and three scores as Temple closed the regular season with a 34-16 victory over Kent State in a Mid-American Conference game at Lincoln Financial Field.

The Owls (8-4, 5-3 MAC), under first-year coach Steve Addazio, are 8-4 for the second straight season but must wait for a bowl invitation, something that failed to happen last year.

The Golden Flashes (5-7, 4-4) finished their first season under rookie head coach Darrell Hazell.

The host Owls had to use three quarterbacks in the game. Starter Chris Coyer left early in the first quarter and did not return after suffering an injured left shoulder. He was replaced by Mike Gerardi, who was then substituted for by senior Chester Stewart late in the opening quarter.

Stewart immediately fumbled away the ball to the Golden Flashes.

Kent State got on the board first early in the second quarter with an 11-yard touchdown run by Jacquise Terry after recovering the Temple fumble at the 16 yard line.

Temple's Matt Brown answered on the ensuing kickoff with a 100-yard return to put the home team up 7-6.

With six seconds left until halftime Brandon McManus hit a 33-yard field goal and the Owls went into the locker room leading 10-6.

Pierce scored his 23rd TD of the season with an 18-yard run to put the Owls ahead 17-6 early in the third quarter.

On the following drive the Golden Flashes drove to the six-yard line, but had to settle for a 22-yard field goal by Freddy Cortez to make the score 17-9.

Pierce posted his second score of the game with a 25-yard TD run and the Owls moved ahead 24-9 with 2:20 left in the third quarter.

Pierce racked up his third TD of the afternoon with a 69-yard scamper to increase the margin to 31-9 with 9:45 left in the contest. The star running back registered 164 yards rushing in the second half.

Temple took over on downs at the Kent State 11-yard line, but had to settle for a McManus 28-yard field goal with 5:58 remaining.

The Golden Flashes came back to score a TD with a 28-yard toss from Spencer Keith to Chris Gilbert, making the score 34-16 with under 5:00 to play.

Temple's Stewart was perfect on six pass attempts for 94 yards and Rod Streater lead the team with three catches and 35 yards. Deon Miller and Joe Jones both grabbed two passes for 44 and 31 yards, respectively.

Keith powered the Golden Flashes air attack by completing 24-of-40 passes for 260 yards and one score. Gilbert caught nine passes for 134 yards and a TD and Terry ran for 38 yards on seven attempts and a score.

The Owls have won the last three matchups against Kent State and now own a 4-2 edge over the Golden Flashes in the all-time series.
